Just not sure how 'not' would be better than 'do'. Looking at the mechanical advantage of 'not' doing it.....removal? seating with a different flange angle? 'Doing' always help create a seal / vacuum initially so it just confuses me when they state 'do not'. Must be something. Since it goes against the standard for many years and they point out to 'not', then it begs the question of why.

Wondering why that would be?

Only reason I could think of is the filter can be overtightened. Could possibly pull threads or be a female dog to take off.

Film of oil is so that the gasket doesn’t stick to the mating surface. Or deform the gasket on other styles of filter.

I still wipe clean oil on the gasket, spin it on and hand tighten. Not gorilla right tho.

Exactly the way I've been doing it for years also.

Motorcraft filter FL-500S shows oiling the gasket on the filter box installation picture.

Never thought much about not doing it until I read this thread.

Yeah, I’ve used some oil filters with o-ring gaskets that have a light wipe of grease on it.
