No mods.
Oil changes every 5k. I also had the undiagnoseae stutter under full throttle. Which magically disappeared as well as any performance or boost.

And yes part of the 5 yr/60k but I also have an esp to 100k.

I believe Opt Prime is having the same problem again.

I’m not sure it’s a problem again. There is a ratcheting tensioner that works before the system presses up, perhaps a very faint rattle is normal before that point. We’ll see. I do think this is a problem that will affect every Raptor... at some point. It would be interesting to see the data, if it existed, between number of AUTO START/STOP events and mileage at failure. I have a lot of starting and stopping with the nature of where I live. The other gent with 50k+ on a 1.5 yo truck may have a longer commute that A: keeps RPMs lower B: minimizes starting and stopping.

Based on that, do you think it would be beneficial to disable the AUTO START/STOP through something like FORScan? I did that on my 2018 because I don't care for it and will do it on my 2019 when I get it as well.

My perception of the issue is anecdotal. You could disable the function and extend a lubrication problem till much later in life, assuming that is the catalyst. That being said start stop has been around for two decades with the Prius and Honda hybrids and none of those seemed to have lubrications issues. Maybe their oiling system was setup specifically to eliminate such a problem and the Raptor is just trying to move too much oil during start up events. When you think about it oil is going to the bottom end, piston squirters, two cylinder heads vs one, turbos and an oil cooler. Maybe too much volume to provide a reliable environment for the phaser in those first few seconds which in turn causes the oscillation and accelerated wear. I did notice the Gen 2 phasers have centering springs.

Would love to see a BMW, Honda, Toyota and Porsche phaser side by side.

All that being said, I love this truck. I thought about trading into an F250 for the diesel, just didn’t enjoy the one I borrowed. This truck brings me immense happiness and hope it’s part of the family for many years. The lady loves to drive it and all too often I get stuck with her Escape...

If the motor craps itself I hope I can order one off Tasca and not be told some line of BS that Ford won’t release an engine.

I wonder if 0-30 syn oil would help on start up. These motors do seem to have a lot to lubercate on start up.

Interesting article. If this is a factor for bearings then it certainly would be for a phaser at the top end of the system. I am going to disable mine.

“Finally, suppliers are addressing wear with dry lubricants on components like main engine bearings. Engine bearings are typically designed to withstand 100,000 start cycles. New bearings are now in use that are designed to withstand 250,000 to 300,000 start cycles. Federal Mogul, for example, has been incorporating polymers on the connecting rod bearings for cars with auto-stop/start systems to reduce friction when oil isn’t pumping.”

I do not have a lot of mileage 16k but from the very minute I got my truck I always turned it auto start/stop off and as soon as plug pull solution was posted I disabled it completely. I still had the cam phaser issue.

Getting my 2017 (15k miles) back after 2 weeks in shop. Needed cam phasers and lifters replaced.

At 5000 miles took it to dealership and they told me nothing wrong after hearing the knocking at start up. Took it a second time after demanding a second look. Finally diagnosed the problem and told me to take it back to the dealership where I purchased it from.

Truck had 3k miles, nasty rattle on start up
100% stock, happened after first oil change
First dealership said was within spec
Second dealership knew right away what it was.
4 weeks waiting on parts
Another 2 weeks because they scratched it and had it repainted.

Truck has a coolant smell and a consistent tick. Dealership that did repair states they pressurized the cooling system and found no leaks.View attachment 116233 And the tick is within spec.

At this time I’m waiting for the coolant light to come on to prove there is a leak somewhere.

I had the same exact thing on my truck, same problem and repair. Purchased January 2018, problem started around 6k miles and progressively got worse. Finally repaired at 12k miles, parts on backorder and at dealer for a month.
