Removed front wheels/tires when I did mine and it took 1.5-2 hours for the complete job.

One other thing to mention is that they recommend that the engine be slightly warm. Not heat or cold soaked though.

Are plug wires only required for the ignition plugs, and NOT the exhaust plugs? Seems like everthing I see about the plug wires is for the ignition?

Also thinking about getting ngk idridum's, anybody have any thoughts on that?

Not sure where people's fear of plug seizing comes from in the first place.


I think it's from 5.4 horror stories.

The top 8 have the coil pack right on the plug, the lower 8 have a short wire running to that same coil pack...so no the top ones don't have wires just a long boot, the lower (exhaust) ones do.

NGK Iridium is what I'm running, LTR6IX-11 (6509), work perfect. Highly recommend.

So I did this the other day, like the op said the hardest are the lower front most ones. The driver side was pretty easy. But the passanger side is right up against the shock tower. You can't see it at all from any normal spots. What worked for me was to turn the wheel right, and bassicly put your head in the wheel well while on your knees. At that point with somebody holding a light you can actually see the plug. I used a short spark plug socket with short maybe two inch socket with a small head ratchet, and I was able to get it.
That was the only one I couldnt get my troque wrench on. But 104 in pounds. Which is about 12nm is not very much and I found that once all my other plugs where tight that they where very close to this amount by had and some didn't even move for this reading.

I just did mine yesterday. The 1 plug I didn't mess with was the 1 behind the steering shaft because I wasn't sure if I would be able to get a socket and ratchet between the shaft and engine. How are you guys getting to that plug?

You likely just need to expand your arsenal of extensions/universals/wobbles.. I have a couple spark plug sockets with swivels built right into the socket. Shortens up the assembly.

If you can see it, you can get it.

I agree, the right tool makes all the difference. Helps to pull the wheel too.

I need to do this, almost to 75,000 miles. guess I will order that offset kit, plugs and wires. Who has the best prices on the NGK plugs?
