I know the shorties are popular, I am not so much of a fan. But I also cannot stand the tall stock antenna. So I cut out 12". The antenna is now lower than the roof line and my garage door is much happier.

I would like to cut off just enough so that if it rubs then I know I better back out of the structure.

Does anyone done any measurements to see how much is needed to cut off to be just above the roof line?

if I remember correctly from high school electronics shop, an antenna has to be a certain length for proper reception. The body can be short, but the coiled wire within has to be a certain length... but I don't remember higher math well either.

Like the idea.....The reason most go with a "Shorty" is because when off-roading the antenna will whip around and can crack the windshield!

Found in another thread.....top of antenna is 88 inches from the ground.

Truck is 78.5, so 8 inch chop should get it close.

since the roof antenna is towards the front and low profile i don't think its an issue, rear of the cab is probably the same height as the antenna. and if you're wanting to use it to test clearance i would probably leave a little extra length anyways, to account for inclines and bumps.
I cut about 6 inches off mine(don't remember the exact number). its about 1-2 inches taller than the highest point. I do think reception may have been effect just slightly. On a couple of occasions over the past 18 months I've heard some minor static, aside from that, reception has been great, plus not really sure i wouldn't have gotten some static where i was with the stock antenna. For a free mod it great. simple, looks stock(better in my opinion), and helps identify possible clearance issues instead of just banging on everything.
