Misfires, cleaned MAF and fixed.

Greetings,

Since about a month back I started to pickup some stumbling which gradually increased over time into misfires, limp mode and flashing CEL. The codes were always P0300 with a P0301 variably through P0306.

SP542:

I never had a problem with the OE plugs, however figured it might be possible that the gaps had opened up and others were having luck with the SP542 plugs. I purchased a set, gapped to .025 per Whipple, no changes.


Octane:

Next I figured I had bad gas, topped off the last ten gallons with 93 from Shell and added a bottle of VP octane booster, guaranteed to raise 10 gallons 80 points, should raise my 38 gallon around 2 octane. The problem seemed to clear up, for awhile.

Just yesterday I had another massive misfire event, limp mode and flashing CEL. At this point I was actually getting pretty worried and as such back to the internet.

Weephole:

Ah, the 1/16" weephole. The concept makes sense to me as I live in Florida where the temperate dewpoint spread is within 1 to 5 degrees at some point each day. Before I committed to drilling a hole I wanted to pick a good location and actually look into the Whipple CAC for evidence of water. After popping the oil changing cover I loosened the discharge hose and took a peak inside, COMPLETELY dry. However, I cannot share the same findings with the silicone hose which had a sheen of Mobile 1 throughout it. It was then that I knew what the problem was.

TIP MAP:

I popped the TIP MAP sensor just in front of the throttle body off the intake tube and sure enough, covered in Mobile 1. Cleaned her down with CRC MAF spray and took for a test drive. No less than 10 WOT runs with all the nannies off to 80 with ZERO issues. At this point, all I am seeing is -1.9 to -2.4 volts on the knock sensor at WOT above 5200 RPM and I am contributing that to the 91 degree intake temperature.

In conclusion, if you have hesitation, misfire codes, limp mode and/or a flashing CEL please consider a $12 solution first.

Just bought a Stage 3 catch can.

Yet another reason for the skeptics to invest in a catch can . Installed mine at 1950 miles and it's got about 4000 on it now. Can already has collected a small amount of Mobil one in the bottom . It works !

You sure it's a MAF? Gen1 Ecoboosts were speed density so they didn't have MAFs. I haven't researched it but I haven't heard anything about Gen2's using MAF sensors either.

The sensor in the intake tube of the Gen2 is the intake air sensor IAT1, not MAF. The sensor just before the throttle body is the TIP MAP sensor. There is no MAF sensor at all.

Got to the rear manifold sensor and it too was completely covered in oil. I think this will become a ritual with oil changes or every other after the catch can install.

Yep, that front sensor is called the Throttle Intake Pressure or TIP sensor. It is the same part number T-MAP sensor as the rear T-MAP sensor you have in top photos. The little green bulb you see is the temp probe. The TIP sensor should also measure the incoming boosted air temp, but it isn't included in the HPTuners PID datalog files. I've asked them (MPT and HPTuners) to add it so we can measure the actual charge air temp out of the intercooler, but they haven't acted on it. MPT said it was "good enough" to measure the IAT at the rear of the intake manifold. I disagree because it is skewed by the actual engine temperature, but I can't add it (yet) to the nGauge PID list. The Boost Air Temp/Charge Air Temp (BAT/CAT) PIDs are listed, but it only reads the rear T-MAP, not the TIP T-MAP.

Oh well, I'm pretty sure that when Cobb Tuning releases their AP for the EB Raptor it will have ALL the PIDs available for viewing and logging. Those guys are professional and cover everything you can use. MPT isn't "bad", they're just using the software tools that HPTuners gives them.
