which SMOG company can also registered an out of state car? I'm in Northern Calf.

Thanks to this thread, bringing an out of state Raptor into California was easy!

Ordered an '18 in mid June, showed up two weeks ago and flew out to take delivery on Thursday 10/12. Drove it from Austin, Tx to San Diego, CA (21 hours straight through) on Friday. Today found a local moving company that weighed the truck (took 5 minutes and cost $10) and then had it smogged (took 12 minutes and cost $46). Found out while I was waiting for the smog test, the smog test place said they could register it, verify the VIN, issue a California title and license plates all for a $70 fee (this fee is in addition to tax, registration, etc). So all said a done in under an hour and I didn't even have to set foot into a DMV.

A lot of Smog companies in San Diego seem to offer 3rd party DMV services. They can do all kinds of stuff like registration, sales tax, etc. I did verify that most though can only deal with actual titles if you're trying to register an out of state vehicle. They were not approved to handle certificates of origin. That's DMV only.

Worth a phone call to your local shops. Pretty much anything is better than the CA DMV.

I called a couple around here and they said to go to DMV.. do you have a name of the SMOG center? I'm hoping it's a chain.

If I order an '18 from an out-of-state dealer, does the dealer need to do anything special to order it California emissions compliant, or do all 18s come from the factory compliant and with the proper sticker? Do I have to go to DMV, or can I do everything through AAA?

This makes me mad; not necessarily because the steps have been discussed “ad naseum” here, but because DEALERS are the ones who should KNOW what to do!!!

This is the take-home, once again...
The dealer MUST spec the CA EMISSIONS option on the order or else the MSO will not show it. Why don’t they just do this? Don’t know; ignorance or oversight. But if they’d just spec it, then the DEALER can take care of the reg for you. Most states have a reciprocal with the CA DMV.

And, if they DON’T...then you’ve gotta follow the steps I’ve (and others like @SOAKINRED on page 1 of this thread) laid out before:

Weight
Smog
DMV for inspection, fees, CA taxes, if not paid

It’s that simple.

Got it, thanks. Sorry, I asked the question before reading through all the posts. Now the hunt to find a dealer willing to sell at MSRP. At MSRP has been pretty easy to find, but I am having trouble find anyone willing to go below.

This is not correct... I just did the YESTERDAY. My 2018 has the CA emission option. Guess what? The DMV gives ZERO ***** about that. NO MATTER WHAT you need to get a smog check, get the truck weighed. Yes you can do all of this at AAA, that is where I did it.

Now maybe an out of state dealer can do all of this but mine in ND could not... I brought the Cert of Origin from FORD that said CA emissions etc. Again, no ***** given go get a smog check.

Yes. You are correct. And so am I!

A smog check IS required no matter what, to get registered. But, as I mentioned, if the CA emission is Spec’d and the DEALER DOES HAVE reciprocal, then the the dealer CAN reg it for you. But, with mine from TN, I had to do the scale and smog thing.

So far I have not seen a dealer out of state be able to register the car to CA from out of state... If this is possible, this would be the ONLY way to not have to weigh the truck and get a smog...
