Sounds like you've worked with a bunch of disgruntled ********. I've received nothing but compliments on my truck. I don't usually drive my Raptor for work, but this week has been an exception with my GF's vehicle in the body shop so she's borrowing my Ford Escape.

Just yesterday at a client location I had on of the employees come up behind me but his hand on my shoulder and say "you know, I just told Pete to stop paying your invoices... Anyone driving a truck like that is getting paid too much" it was all jokes though and we talked about the buying process, being on a wait list for a 2017 then special ordering a 2018, etc etc.

This is about how most interactions go with my friends, family and colleagues when discussing the truck. Only person that's mildly salty is my cousin, and I'm pretty sure that's because he wants one but he's too ***** to tell his wife he's going to get one.

Honest question - can you really build your own Raptor for cheaper? Things like unique frame and drivetrain, the drive modes, ability to completely disable computer aids, etc can't really be replicated, at least cheaply, along with a factory warranty... right?

Well here you're creating an unrealistic comparison. You obviously cannot modify a truck to that extent and maintain factory warranty, so it's a self-serving question.

Can you build a truck that's more powerful and better off-road for less money by starting with something cheaper? Absolutely.

Can you build one that's better off-road, faster, has the on-road manners, the reliability of having all the parts engineered to work together reliably with a factory warranty? Obviously not.

For most of us as Raptor owners, that's probably more important than a purpose build off road monster.

That said, I do plan to buy a used truck at some point and modifying it and doing as much of the work myself with the help of friends as I can. Not because I want or need something better off road, but because it would be fun to do, and heck... It probably still won't be better off road. I just want something capable that i'm not afraid to get some trail damage on.
