For mounting is it just a bolt and nut strait through?

Yes bolts straight through the sheet metal, you could recess it in the bed cap by cutting a hole in the cap if you wanted to, not necessary however.

I'd like to understand how to best mount a crossbar. Anyone know how to remove the plastic bed rail caps? Anyone have pics of what the bed rails look like naked, without the plastic caps?

They just clip on, small tabs on the underside of the bed cap on the inside of the bed, work you way down unclipping them all and then just pull it off.

Let truck sit out in the sun before removing the bedside trim to save some clips. inevitably you will break a couple, there are so many its not a big deal. A new pair is only ~$60 if u destroy them

Granted this is my '12, so not exactly the same but similar. More pics in my gen1 build

We welded studs in facing up on the '12, but on my '17 used some beefy nutserts. More than strong enough considering there's not much weight on this bar. The location i chose on the Gen2 had the outside bolts located in on of the open trim channels, so needed a nut and bigger washer fed in from the bottom (You will need a couple long extensions). Was short on time when I installed it on my 17 so didnt document much. I shifted the hoop forward slightly compared to my 12, didn't realized back them how much bed movement we had during runs, but the orig spot never did touchdown.
