Noise from engine after startup

I've started having a weird noise from my engine almost immediately after startup. It seems to happen more often after a cold startup not after the truck's temp is up and warm. A few seconds after starting the truck a very noticeable "grind" noise comes from the engine bay. It lasts for only a second or two then its never heard from again. Its noticably loud enough to hear from inside the cab without the music running. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not the heat/ac/air is turned on or off. I don't know if its a belt, timing chain or what.

I've owned my raptor for about 3 months now and just had its first service and everything looked good. '12 with 86,000 on it. As far as I'm concerned after checking the car fax before I bought it had no belt, plugs or any problems engine wise. It has regularly been serviced at Ford since it was new (for what its worth). Other than a whine from the power steering it runs great. Anyone have any ideas? Ill be posting a video in the morning.

I did find a few videos of this problem on the ecoboost. They did come out with a TSB regarding stretched Timing Chains. Same sound, possibly same problem?

Open hood and remote start it, you may be able to narrow it down by getting up and close, my guess would be belt or pulley related??

I'll do that in the morning when I video the startup. After some googling I found this old thread on fordraptorz forum. It won't let me use the link for some reason. This guy suffered from what sounds like a similar problem except his happened only when using the remote start. Mine happens whether or not I use the remote start. The thread didnt have a whole lot of detail but some blamed the problem on the starter. He says the problem quit when he had a new starter installed.

Starter could make sense if the solenoid is not fully allowing the gear in the starter to retract. I have never looked but if you are able to remove a cover to access the flywheel then you can check for scarring. Also try and look at the starter gear as it runs through the start up process by laying under the truck, (in park with the wheels blocked please!) And then use the remote start.

Famous last words, "if you hit it faster it will smooth out some!"

Common problem with the trucks that several members have had...other threads have videos posted of the sound. My 2012 has done it since I bought it new and only experience it when it's very cold, even though it's always parked in the garage. The 'whine' lasts for about 20 seconds at most. Some members claim it's a timing belt or some sort of 'pulley' but I'm not mechanically inclined so don't quote me on the exact cause.

Bottom line, see if Ford can find something wrong if it's bothering you or affecting the trucks performance. I'm going on 5 years without an issue in this 'whining when cold startup'.

I narrowed the whining down to the power steering pump. Replaced and sound is gone. The quick grinding sound, based on what most people think, is related to the AC compressor engaging. Mine has done it since day one, as have many others. No issues though
