I've done the same, both paper towels and newspaper, but prefer microfibers. Partially because I no longer get a newspaper and it just seems easier than going through rolls of paper towels.
As others have stated, the liner goes in between which is why you have to remove the screws. Once it's tucked in and the screws put back in, the liner will be nice and tight and won't move.
Anyone know how to safely remove windshield urethane adhesive from paint? I guess the factory did a sloppy job and I had some residual urethane on the driver side A-pillar. It's apparently a PITA to get off.
I had the truck in for PPF and ceramic coating and they were able to get some of it...
