I got both coolers today. Technically I think the finned one is a heat exchanger. I installed the Dorman and is was a 15 minute job. Has a slight gap between the tab that holds it down . I should have left the top hose long and it would have help pressure down ward . I ordered a new hose and I will replace it full length to solve that . Other than that pretty clean and looks factory. I installed the heat exchanger this weekend. I am headed To Glamis this weekend to remove BLM closure stakes so the truck will be doing a lot of idling and pulling through the dunes in 4x4 mode. That should be a great opportunity to see how the new coolers do.

I used thread certs to mount the cooler and push lock hose and fittings.

All together between both units and parts I have less than 200.00 and about 3 hours total.

The two coolers did make a difference, while just towing my rock crawler to the dunes i didnt run past 208 even pulling the small hills and the outside temp near or at 100 deg.

While idling and slowly pulling the the sand dunes the temp stayed around 199 . when I pushed it hard through a two mile or so stretch on some fairly flat ground with semi deep sand, it was about 220 but did get to 230 for a few seconds.

Has anyone considered having an even larger one made to snap into the factor mounting? Looks like it could be more than double the stock one, maybe 2.5X the finned area? Maybe by two of the Dorman coolers and have a local shop weld them together?

I replaced the one on my f150 also. I am thinking I may take both stock ones to a radiator shop and have them put them together .

Running three coolers on the car. One behind each fog light hole and one in the trunk in ice water. You could do something similar and just run the ice water when you know your gonna thrash it.
On the trans brake the trans fluid in the car climbs 100* every second it takes a lot to keep it in check

Again I know its only two more rows, but also it's 50 percent more than I have. At 65 dollars shipped, it's relatively inexpensive and a quick easy install. I also purchased this other cooler it holds an additional 1.3 quarts of fluid and am going to toy with trying to come up with a clean install as a secondary if it works, if not i can find a home for it on one of my company trucks.

Dorman 918 234 Transmission Oil Cooler | eBay
Out of curiosity, I checked RockAuto, one of our vendors. They have this listed for $58.79, not including the 5% discount code they provide to us.
More Information for DORMAN 918234
Just search for the part number and there is a drop down for the manufacturer. As an interesting note, they list it as from a 2007 / 2008 Expedition / Navigator.
