Morrie and I have been talking for months about products for my bed. He recommended that I wait for an "updated Roll-X with a new locking mechanism" coming out in August. He told me he would give me specifics on the updates after it arrived, but it was easy to figure out the updates after I had installed it yesterday. I couldn't find anywhere that listed the updates, so I thought I would post them up.

I made a video that reviews the cover and its updates here.

If you prefer a list version, the updates to the updated Roll-X are as follows:
  1. 4 bolts (2 bolts on each rail) attach the cover to the rails, instead of the single hand-tightened plastic fastener for each side.
  2. The locking actuator is now a flat top bolt with a wing nut. It allows you to adjust the height of the locking mechanism.
  3. The weather stripping that was attached to the back of the cover has been relocated to the interior of the cover. This allows you to close the tailgate with the cover closed, but does not seal out water as well.

These were the updates that I noticed, there may be more but I did not have an older Roll-X to compare it to.

In point 3, did you mean to say " ... does NOT seal out water."

Yes. The new seal location would not seal out water AS WELL as the old version. However, it's all relative, and I suspect the new version won't allow much water in anyways.

Relocating the seal to the interior created a gap where it meets the tailgate, which would allow more water intrusion if the water came at the cover in a rear (of truck) to front (of truck) direction. However, the way it rests on the tailgate still makes me completely comfortable that the Roll-X will provide more than adequate water protection. I suspect water will bead off the cover and onto the tailgate, with no real incentive to then drain forward into the bed.

Knowing what I know today, I would still buy this product again today (from Morrie of course!)

I gotta say I don't like the new rear of this cover and the 'gap'. While, like you said, its probably just as secure, it just looks unfinished....

Now maybe I will lean towards a different tonneau...

While you have every right to make that decision, I would still recommend sticking with Bak Industries, and definitely buying from Morrie. I did months of research on tonneau covers and decided this one fit my needs best. I would buy it again today. Your needs might be better met with a Bakflip F1, which is another top-seller and performer for Raptor owners.

I'd also like to point out that if the ONLY reason you have for not picking the Roll-X is the gap, you can just as easily fill that gap with any weather stripping of your choice to alleviate any concerns you may have. All the weather stripping on these products are easily purchased at any big box store, so you can effectively add the weather stripping and retroactively update it to perform like Roll-X 1.0 (requiring you to close the tailgate first of course).

Strange, i too bought an updated rollx in the last couple weeks but mine is different than yours. I have the same front mounting but the rear pads have a large black knob where yours has the wingnuts and mine still has the old style weatherstripping across the tailgate.

While i am at it, i absolutely hate the two chrome credit card sized advertisements on the back. None of the videos and pictures i saw of this cover included that. I am more than happy to show people the product and tell them how much i like it but this just ****** me off. i will be doing my best to remove them or at worst plastidipping them.

You've gotta be kidding me, I F'ing hate chrome, especially on a Raptor. I'd be livid.

There must have been incremental updates, making the rear seal the latest change to the cover. They shipped me this one the second they received the 'new one,' only days ago.

I have to agree with you on the ad placards. I DESPISE chrome, but I'm not going to raise hell over it. Plastidip would be a good call! Personally I'm not going to tear them off and risk water intrusion over aesthetics. Still one of the best covers on the market IMHO.

Thanks for the video. I have a version I received in May that has black plastic locking knobs in the front and back. The front knobs come loose too easily and the cover slides forward and rubs on the cab. I replaced them with nuts.

The wing nuts and adjusters in the back do allow you to lower the back. Looks to me from the video that your's could be a bit lower to minimize the gap and the drivers side side looks a bit high at the very back. Mine wanted to be high there too and I had to really push the track down as I tightened the rail brackets to keep it level.

Lastly I think if you slide the rails back a bit the seal would contact the tailgate nicely.

The rear seal on my cover was glued wrong and Morrie told me to wait to replace it for the new cover.
