question, do you work by the hour? unless you really enjoy and have the proper equipment, it never really makes any sense to do this yourself.

While it really is easier to have a shop do it I prefer to do this myself since they use a hammer torque stick to tighten and the hammering breaks the chrome sleeves on the lug nuts and they will rust after a winter of salt... I use a hand tool to remove and replace...

If you want to rotate your own tires I say go for it. Should only take half out. I would put the jack stands under each of the front control arms then put your jack under the center of your rear diff. then when you take off your tires cross the non driving wheels move the driving wheels to the front. have fun torque spec I believe is 148lb-ft

I'm with you '14, the last time I had my tires rotated by a shop they scratched the wheels between the lug nuts. It was obviouse that the tech was in a hurry and after each nut was tight he ****** drug the wrench to the next nut, using the wheel as a guide. This was on my wife's Merecedes and the guy probably thought.. well, who knows what he thought.

That's awful!!! It's that old mentality of "Well It's Not My Vehicle"

I have issues having the dealer work on my vehicle unless I'm watching. I know I can't be in the shop all the time with them, but I saw some "ASE certified" 14-year old trying to pick up one of my tires and it looked like he was about to split his ******* open. As he was wheeling it across the floor, it wobbled and fell... Into the truck, but thank God that the running board/step caught it.

Aside from that, I cross the front bringing them back and then put the rear straight up. All they do is front to rear, no crossing. So, I'll just do it myself. I have the ability to use a shop that has a lift, so I just raise the truck like an inch off the ground and do it that way.

Yeah I finally learned that all the shops around here only rotate front to back and Do Not switch sides even on non-directional tires. Which as you can imagine gives you less wear, which they like so they can sell you another set of tires. And I hate letting anyone touch my truck. Just call me Francis...

Sooooo, I rotate my own.

I was a shop manager at Walmart for awhile and They normally rotated front to back but if you asked them to crisscross them they would. Shit does happen though. Another guy in the shop was told by the customer to rotate tires on a new Cadilac DTS. He did it without any problems. The customer drives off and returns right away saying they were out of balance now. So i go over look at it and notice right away that the front and back wheels are different sizes. The back wheels were wider and rubbing on the brakes. The guy was a good worker not the brightest but he did exactly what the customer wanted. It took me quite awhile to explain to the customer that his fancy new car you couldn't rotate the tires like he wanted.

Ok so the point of my story is most of the time when you take it to a shop just tell them the way you want it. They just get set in there ways and don't think about it. I currently don't have they right equipment to do it myself so i take it to a shop.
