Sorry - the MT DMV told me that California CHP is on the lookout for out of state plates, cracking down on those who try to skirt sales tax and registration. Corrective action is to register the truck properly or have it leave the state. I've done this a number of times over the last 20+ years. One time I got a letter from CHP telling me to take care of registration, so I just sold the car and replied with that information. Another time I got a letter from CHP telling me I was reported by someone, basically to tell me I am cheating the state out of tax money. Oddly, that letter came more than a year after I bought the car. In CA if you own a car for more than one year you do not have to pay sales tax when registering it. I liked having a real address in Montana, so I could at least try to say I spend a good amount of time there at my second home.
Or you could simply not live in California at all... Win-win!

Every state has laws to combat this... know and understand your particular state that you reside in. Here in Florida, the vehicle must be out of the state within 45 days of purchase and must remain out of the state for 6 months exactly. California its 3 days and 1 year... it works well if you can hack it or if you can afford to get caught. Some are luckier than others. And yes, t@xation is theft. There is nothing patriotic about it...

If I lived in a blue state that charged sales tax I'd do whatever I could to avoid it. A bit over a year ago I moved from OR to ID. 6% tax stings a little after having enjoyed no sales tax for 23 years in OR. However, I'm actually represented here so 6% on whatever I buy is a small price to pay to live in a clean, relatively crime free and beautiful environment compared to the hellscape crime and drug stricken shit hole that Portland (and all other west coast cities) has become.

If you live in WA or CA I say register your Raptor R in MT and sleep well knowing that you haven't contributed to the corruption there any further.

WHAAAAAAAAAAT? California great place, yo. If they’re in CA now, they should stay. Definitely no room for them in Texas, we’re repatriating them back to CA weekly now. Lots of South Americans coming here who actually work, and contribute to society. Not for nothing but if it’s between illegal invaders willing to do work and Californians moving in...

damn... tough choice. I’ll take the hard working illegals.

Got it. Not coming to Idaho, not even to visit. I remember it being cold as hell and there was this solid white stuff all over the ground.

Shouldn’t come to Texas either. It’s full and you need to speak Spanish first, English is only spoken as a 2nd language. Also: Scorpions, skunks, porcupines, feral hogs, rattle snakes, coral snakes, mountain lions & chupacabras. Plus it’s hotter than hell.

I looked around Lake Travis a few years back before moving from craptastic Oregon. Loved the TX culture, southern hospitality and friendliness. Didn't like the lack of public land and the geographic variation is better in the mountain west. Flippin' humid down there and too close to the porous and unenforced border. Abbott needs to deploy the Nat'l Guard, enforce that border and not bus them elsewhere.

We really need to institute the “Hotel California Law” - You can move in to California anytime you wish, but you can never leave.
Grew up there and left in '98. Never going back. Dems have turned what was a once a great place to live into an over regulated taxed to the hilt crime tolerant dystopian nightmare.

I grew up in the Midwest. My first job took me to LA in 1986. My job was to extract from a bunch of retiring Title Insurance guys all their rules and decision making process to put into computer code. These guys were all in their 50's and 60's at the time and had grown up in the LA area. I'll never forget going to lunch with them and them telling me stories ( I bet mostly true) how Los Angeles and California was an absolute paradise in the late 40's and 1950's before everyone moved out there.

Now as I get close to the big R, it's my turn to tell someone how beautiful, clean, safe and affordable Seattle was in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Well at least they are raising the gas tax $0.50 a gallon on Sunday...
