Good stuff. Glad you were able to assist and they had cel service. Its shocking how quickly things can go south on you. I always play the game "what if" when we are out. What if the truck died, what if we ran out of water, what if someone fell, etc. Keeps you in the mindset that shit can and will go wrong. I carry a Foretrex 601 just for tracking and waypoints. Not a navigator but I've used it to find my way back a few times.

Try the G A I A APP. I started using them when it was free. Worth whatever they are charging now. If I can figure out how to use it, Anyone can

20 + lbs for me with 5 liters, long underwear, extra pair of socks, bivi sack, head lamp, para cord, duct tape, fire starter, rain jacket and additional analog compass - About the minimum I go out with. Not including what is attached to me.
Not fun being stuck and uncomfortable for a night. Basics change per season and location.

Great write up, glad they were found. Cell phone signals are REALLY strange at times. I once had my phone beep and tell me it had a Wi-Fi signal when I was on the Appalachian trail on a high ridge at least 3/4 of a mile from anything. I'm assuming the signals randomly bounce at times?

So True now. If all else fails, head to high ground and pray for a bar or two. Often a bar of signal will let you text but not call?
Get the Garmin and never be out of Reach lol
I know I’ve said this before, but some folks don’t know. When I send a message, the recipient opens it and gets a satellite image of my exact coordinates.
