New Gen 2 Owner - Day 1 problems...[resolved, hopefully]

What's up guys... hoping to get some information (and hopefully piece of mind) from folks that are more experienced with the truck (mods) than I am. Apologies up front for the long read.

Disclaimer: I've notified the dealership I purchased from of the issue and they said they'd work with me to get the issue resolved but, because it may be a day or two before I can take it in, I thought to ask here.

I purchased a 2017 802a with 39K mi. yesterday. Single owner, clean Carfax. The dealership got recalls taken care of by Ford last week and I set up a pre-purchase inspection which uncovered the brakes were 'in the yellow' and there was a slight leak in the oil pan, but nothing that was dripping or problematic. The dealer did a brake job and replaced the oil pan at my request. The PPI also mentioned the truck had an aftermarket cat back exhaust and intake, but when I brought those mods up, relative to a service plan/warranty, they said those two items shouldn't be an issue, and the truck "hadn't been tuned."

So, I'm driving the truck home (About 200mi. or so) and once I got through afternoon traffic on the freeway, I went to pass someone and hopped on the gas and, under heavy acceleration, the truck started sputtering, exhaust started popping, and check engine light starts flashing... I throw my hazards on and limp off the freeway and as I'm slowing down, pulling into a gas station, the check engine light goes off. I shut the truck off, wait a few minutes and restart it and there appears to be no issues... no warning indicators, no weird noises, no rough idle or anything else concerning (aside from what had just happened). I get going down the road and as I'm merging onto the freeway, I get on the gas again and the same thing happens... sputtering, exhaust popping, so I let up immediately and no check engine light comes on this time. All gauges and temps seem fine so I just limp it home at 70'ish without any hard acceleration or anything.

As I'm cleaning out the truck, I notice there's a letter and some paperwork in the center console and it's a letter from the original owner that details the mods and work done to the truck as follows:
1.) AFE Track Series Intake (installed at 19k miles)
2.) AWE OFG Exhaust (cat back) - (installed at 19k miles)
3.) Mishimoto Intercooler and piping - (installed at 19k miles)
4.) SPD 180 degree thermostat - (installed at 19k miles)
5.) Ford Performance M-12405-35T spark plugs (installed at 35k miles, so 4k miles ago)
6.) Rigid 360 & SRL Lights
7.) Morimoto XB Gen 2 Headlights

Later in the letter he notes the following: "Was tuned with a Cobb AP but uninstalled prior to trade in. Ready to be tuned."

I'm not historically a tuner or a huge mods guy and was under the impression I was purchasing a low mileage, 1-owner, really clean raptor with an intake and exhaust.

Having a brand new (to me) truck have issues in the first couple hundred miles is hugely frustrating and bums me out, but I'm not sure if I should be VERY concerned and be pushing to unwind the deal -or- if what I'm describing is pretty benign. 1 other note is that the truck was nearly empty when I went to pick it up (and test drove it) and they filled it up for me before I left but I'm not sure if they potentially put cheap/low octane gas in it, and if that alone could be causing the issues I'm having.

Honestly I would return it. With those problems something pricey could be in your future. Granted, those are neat mods, but sometimes keeping it stock is worth it. Show all those notes to the dealer. The only thing in my opinion that catches my attention is the tune. Otherwise than that I like those mods. Welcome to FRF

Someone will come along to correct me, but I believe some intakes and intercoolers require a tune. I would return it to stock as much as possible, or ask the dealer to at least provide the parts. That is if you like the truck otherwise.

I do like the truck overall, I'd just like it to run right. I can ask the dealer about having it returned completely to stock and see if that's an option they'd roll with... not sure at this point.

Yeah all the mods listed are VERY common and almost a staple to almost every raptor owner. So it’s not like they’re crazy out of this world mods causing detrimental issues. You still maintain the factory warranty like you mentioned even though there was currently an exhaust and intake. And it also seems those mods went hand in hand with a tune. As “GCATX” mentioned i would get in touch with goosetuned and see about getting a COBB tuner and a custom tune from him. And go from there.

Thank you, I'll do that. Are the symptoms I mentioned super worrisome to anyone but me? Are they indicative one or more specific issues, given what I've explained about the truck and when they occurred?

If it was tuned, the warranty is... questionable, whether it was removed or not. By themselves, the intake, plugs and intercooler won’t hurt you assuming the install was done correctly. However, the intake is wasted money and often results in DTC’s on the later Gen 2 years.

exhaust popping is probably normal- 0FG is loud, I have the 2FG and it’s loud, but 0FG is bordering on obnoxious.

Low octane gas did not cause your problems here. I’d ground the truck and not drive it. Get it back to selling stealership and if I’m being honest, I’d want to undo this “deal”. I suspect there’s more than a bit of fixing to do. I doubt there’s broken hard parts, but maybe a leak down and compression test wouldn’t hurt to be sure?

It doesn’t sound like the issue is detrimental. I’m not one to say if it’s indicative to another issue, as I’m a Jen Juan owner. But it’s obviously worriesome. I do think that it’s a good thing that CEL comes on. Goose tuned will be able to tell you EXACTLY the codes it’s throwing once you get a Cobb tuner.

Also, the fact that you found a mod list, the previous owner cared enough about the truck to take note what had been done. And to let you know it’s ready to be tuned again. Insinuating nothing is wrong or will be preventing you from tuning it again. I did the SAME THING when I sold my previous moded vehicle, and I hardly ever stomped on it even with all the mods I had done. Too scared to break it lol. Just “feels like” to me the mods were installed with care AND good taste lol But I’m an optimistic person so….. curious to know what you find out though
