I am looking at getting into my next truck! I am a huge ford guy... (previous few, 19 SD, 19 3.5, 15 5.0, 14 3.5..)
i went in to order a 2022... i was shocked at being 20 over sticker plus a year wait or ****..... i walked out frustrated (purchased 7 new vehicles from the same sales team since 2014....)
All previous trucks have been modified....
I am caught in a bit of a triangle! Looking at purchasing a gen 1 and adding a supercharger/apple car play/2 10s, and getting a gen 2 and going full e85/e50, bigger intercooler, adaptive cruise,360 cam...
Truck will be not be perfect, i use my stuff... an 85k mile example is more my style then MINT....
wanting to stay under 50 saw gen 3 markup and moved some $$ around...... surely a 75k mile~ 2017 802A is possible... or a 2012~ with 85k~ for 28~ plus say 15 in upgrades.....(blower 10k) (3k in audio) (2k in random items)
I will tow a trailer with two Can am x3s on it....
Truck will not be a DD, and may see the winter.
I have driven a stock 2013 and a stock 2018... the sound/rumble/fun of the V8 is the draw... the practical assessment of having a 10 year old+ steel body in MN is the draw back.
What would y'all do?
How would y'all go about it?
Wait 6 months? buy now? Wait until the R drops?

If you don’t like the price of the current gen 3’s you’re not going to like the R.

Used prices are about to correct. Hold fast for a couple more months and you’ll find some deals.
I 1000% agree the markup on the R is going to be insane. I was referencing once it launches more gen 1/2/3s may hit the market, increasing supply, lowering prices across the used market.

Drive all the ones you can until one speaks to you. Cruse through build threads here. Ask questions. Have fun. Don't buy a prius.
Cant promise i won't daily a prius! :p i witnessed a whipped gen 1 which got me all sorts of interested. The weather here is terrible 1/2 the year or id simply have a SD and a mustang. The key is a combination of something i can red-light cruise, modify and enjoy. The additional ability of pulling various toys is a bonus.

Raptors are not know for their towing ability. That said, a lot still do. So look at the weight of your trailer and tounge weight. Not sure if there is a towing difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2.

only towing a 24 foot flat bed with 2 3500 lbs axles. or a 6k~ fiberglass boat...The rating is 8k per "internet research" (we know how reliable this is) which puts me just under.

You will definitely get more tech on a Jen Too (2017+), stock to stock, slightly better power, slightly better suspension. But... You can get a Jen Juan significantly cheaper. Unless you are a true off road hero, exploiting the Jen Too advantages over the earlier Raptors is very challenging.

I have plenty of “projects” from ‘smithing to bikes, SxS, and the Rap. Honestly, at some point it becomes a chore to keep up with ( yeah #FirstWorldProblems ) I enjoy that the Rap is capable of doing what it does and is capable of so much more and still backed by a full factory warranty.

You have to decide if the extra coin is worth the $$$. If you’re addicted to the v8 rumble, and it’s v8 or nothing, just stick with ’14 or earlier trucks. You can definitely add a blower, tune etc. but keep in mind you’re definitely exceeding the ratings of the long block and transmission and if you use it hard, you’re going to break something sooner or later.

Jen Too has similar limitations; the transmission is rated to ~590 foot pounds IIRC, so once you go beyond that, you’re pushing things. a tune on a Jen Too will easily bust 600 foot pounds. That being said, there are plenty of tuned
2017+ trucks running around on stock internals, etc. and going strong.

You can discount the as of yet, vaporware Raptor R. I’ve been saying since the first “rumblings” that it won’t make it to public sale and I’m sticking with that prediction. I think Ford is too Ch!cken$hit to attempt to take on the TRX for fear of trying and failing, taking the CAFE hit and crunching the numbers and realizing that the actual number of consumers who will follow through and buy it are maybe 5000 or so, making it a potential money loser. Now, if gas was $1.80 for super, yeah, they’d sell like hotcakes if they were sub 90k but that’s not reality.

In my world, I’d go for the Jen Too. That said, if I could score a Jen Juan under 30k... I’d take a hard look...
