Coming to you from near complete ignorance as I’ve done next to no towing in my life. Have a Gen 3 and would like to get a decent towing setup to trailer various sports cars between 3300 - 4000lb but mostly a GT4. I’m based in SWFL and trailer would be used a few times a year for various tracks around the SE but also to a summer home in NC.

Understanding the Raptor isn’t the best towing machine the GT4 is a small enough car that it seems it should be doable (read some threads in the Gen 2 forum).

I’m interested only in an enclosed trailer and understand that a WDH would likely be of benefit. Does anyone have any input as to trailer or experience doing something similar with a Gen 3?

Glad to hear it. Just wondering about the compounded weight and distribution with an enclosed trailer.

Always try to keep your load balanced in your trailer, the best towing experience is to have your trailer level when loaded. Always use a weight distribution hitch as well. I have towed a lot and always add a bit of air to the rear tires when loaded down, especially if you add some stuff in your box. Post some pics when you are hooked up. You can adjust the height of your truck by playing with the chains on the hitch set up a bit to keep it as level as possible.

Tongue weight is the only issue but that can be easily remedied by W/D hitch and std dual wheel trailers. Is it enclosed or open? I have a 3.2k travel trailer 4K loaded and it pulls like it is not there.

The raptor will be. perfect to pull the GT3. I see X5’s and Cayenne’s pulling track cars all the time at the track, the Raptor will make short work of the HT3

Seeing mixed reports on use of WDH with aluminum trailers which opens many questions.

1) Should I be looking for steel trailers only?

2) Thoughts on whether a WSD is necessary?

3) Recommendations for a single car trailer?

Thanks,
Jordan

1. Steel is going to be almost twice the weight of aluminum. But much cheaper.

2. Recommended you use a WDH for anything over 5k lbs. With that said, I've personally towed 6k lbs without one on my Gen 2 with Deavers. (Aluminum open trailer with my Audi on it). I was on the highway for about an hour with speeds of 65-75. Tow Mode, Tires aired up to 42psi (45 hot), Brake Controller adjusted, and I thought it did great.

3. If you're sticking with Aluminum - ATC, Aluma, Intech, Sundowner, Featherlite.

As long as it has an A-Frame in the front, a WDH should work. Some Trailers have diamond plating to cover up this A-Frame, but its still possible.

A small P car is literally nothing to a Raptor. I towed this for 350 miles and the truck didn't know it was there...lost maybe 1mpg

Lost 1 mpg??? I think you been nippin at the bottle.
I tow a 16’ enclosed V nose trailer with a SxS in it, total weight most likely less than yours and it cuts the mpg close to in half.
