So Ford could go modest and bump 3.5 H.O. HP by 50HP and TQ accordingly. Or even a little higher and really have little R&D in the engine shop for the Gen 3. Now if the R V8 is to come, they can do this and maybe sell several less and get people back for the R.

Or they can surprise us with a much highly retuned 3.5 shortly and be on the heels of the TRX now and sell more 3.5 H.O. trucks even before the R drops.

So a couple of things that would stop Ford from going overboard is possible warrantee work if they feel the 3.5 could not handle it, or they did not want to put in much time and effort reworking the 3.5 H.O. And feel they will still sell a ton of them.

This is my take and it may not be yours. Your opinion is valued!

I think for purists... as in pure off-road enthusiasts.... there is a lot to like about the raptor... it’s lighter. It has factory 37s as an option.... due to its weight savings, it likely has better handling and better suspension. It has quite a bit more range and the horsepower is much more than you can use the majority of off-road situations and certainly not lacking for those times when you want to open it up.

However... for everyone else who does light off-roading... just wants a cool pavement princess of a truck.... cross shopping the TRX and Raptor.... hands down the TRX is going to win... sure there are some who will say, “I’m never buy in’ a Dodge!” But for the regular consumer who doesn’t off-road much... it’s a no brainer.

full disclosure... if I were in the market for a truck right now I’d buy the TRX over the raptor without thinking twice...

I’m sorry, the TRX is very tempting but the Raptor is a better looking truck. The TRX checks some boxes but at the end of the day the Gen 2 Raptor looks better. I’m still undecided on the Gen 3. Will have to see what the Raptor R offers.

What good is all that horsepower if the vehicle housing it looks like it is a better fit for a pride parade than a trip across the desert?

I believe the GT motor was discussed in previous threads. The GT 3.5TT does have some differences as compared to the Raptors. I don’t have them off hand. But also the GT is a much more expensive vehicle and the cost of the motor can be justified. I also think Ford has mileage and emissions targets for the Raptor that differ from the GT car. I think the only reason they used a V6 in that car was weight/space, verse a V8.

@FordTechOne

If Ford can get 660hp in the GT why not 600hp in this Gen 3?

They could, but the GT parts are low volume, expensive, and are not suited to a truck application (cams, intake, etc). That would mean redesigning and manufacturing said parts, which is cost prohibitive. As mentioned, the Raptor is much heavier and less aerodynamic than a GT, so there would be a lot of engineering in terms of thermal management to get it to pass all required Ford durability testing.

If all you care about is HP, you have money to burn, and don't want to bother with a custom/modded truck, then I agree with you....but I would hardly call that person a 'regular consumer'.
