I’ve done a search and see talks of issues with getting off-road insurance in older threads. I’m curious if anyone has found an insurance provider that covers off-roading accidents? Our build is almost done, and we need to get something figured out.

Back in February, a tie rod bolt sheared while doing about 50 over lighter terrain. We were able to stop try and repair it and ultimately (slowly) get it to the road to be towed without too much issue. Had it been earlier in the day hitting heavier terrain, closer to 100, it could have been catastrophic.

depends on where you are. private property, might not be covered. but a general rule to follow is this. if you can get a ticket (speeding, fix it, whatever) then you are covered by your insurance. blm (public land) has a speed limit and you can get ticketed for speeding, so technically your insurance will cover you, since its a public road. however there are probably some exemptions, but legally, if you can be ticketed, your policy is in effect. now what you are doing during that time may affect how much coverage you will have and maybe none at all depending on the reason for the incident. but i would check with your insurance company to find what coverages you have

Just out of curiosity, what is the speed limit on BLM land? I've never once seen a sign in 40 years of driving there. I have seen a sign or two on the better county roads going through BLM land, but even those are rare out here.

depends on the state and county. old stage road down in the springs has a speed limit, however it crosses from blm to private on several occasions. i believe its a lower speed limit. most blm i have seen has a 35-40mph speed limit. in wyoming where we hold our event the limit is 55. in nevada where i was just camping and near where we have another offroad event, the limit is 45. however the agent that we spoke with said something along the lines of "with those trucks i dont expect you to be going speed limit"

best thing to do is contact the blm office and ask what the speed limit is in their county

The premiums for "off-road" insurance, if it existed, would be pretty insane. Track day insurance for my car, which is on a paved surface in a controlled environment, is ~$400 a day for an agreed value policy of $45k with a 10% deductible. That's for a typical track day which is 5 20-30 minute sessions on 2-4 mile tracks. So they're really only expecting you to go ~100 miles in that day. And thats going around the same track over and over. I know someone who had to make a claim on his policy, and the rates to cover his new car are triple (over $1k) to cover his new car...

The inherent increased risk of offroad due to - the potential for ever changing trail conditions, you don't usually repeat the same 2-4 miles of trail all day, the potential for someone to hit you as oncoming traffic or from an intersecting trail, as well as any other factors due to you being in a 100% uncontrolled environment. I don't see any insurance carrier offering coverage for that. The price they would have to charge, I don't think anyone would buy it.

Do you jump your car at the track? That's where most damage for Raptor runs comes from at least at the smaller east coast events that are loops. Can't imagine how many more people would be out there sending it every lap thinking their off road insurance would cover damage.

No, we don't jump road race cars...lol. So again, higher inherent risk to the insurer with any kind of "off-road" coverage.

I am interested in this as well, im up to over 20k in damage YTD ‍♂️♂️♂️

you got out cheap.

A full prep of my truck is generally between $5K-$8K. If the shocks need to be freshened up, $10K.

And I'm not even linked. uniballs, aircraft grade hardware, boots, seals, fluid changes... they add up quick.

you do not want to know what a full prep on a 6100 runs.

Off pavement does not always mean off road. My experience is really from the adventure bike market but I think the rules are applied the same way. Guys I have ridden with have had "incidents" on forest service and BLM roads and have had that damage covered. Some have been ticketed and some have not. Typically if a road can be found on a map, paper or digital, and a location can be assigned...you're on the road. I can't see where a company could have a different policy for cars.
