Took my 2019 in for Cam Phaser noise and CEL on. 40K miles It showed Bank 2 cat efficiency below acceptable levels also. Dealer is replacing the Cam Phasers, Timing Chains and Tensioners plus the Right Cat. Anyone have just one cat go bad? I asked how they diagnosed the cat issue and if something else maybe causing the cat to go bad. He said the computer states its bad. Can Ford Techs see random misses if they don't set a CEL? Not into taking truck back for cats every so often. Maybe its a bad cat but I've never seen one go bad without another issue being there.

Did you have spark plugs from the factory? Did you ever experience misfire or sluggish acceleration? If so, the unburned gas could have melted a cat. Seems weird it happened already at 40k miles.

Any mods?

Yes, the Ford scan tool records misfires and stores them in Mode 6 data. They can also view live power balance which will show cylinder misfires.

Catalyst DTCs need to be diagnosed; the code alone does not condemn the catalyst. Anything from a leaking injector to an exhaust leak can cause a catalyst code.

The dealer also should not be replacing the timing chain or tensioner. The TSB directs only to replace the phasers.

Doesn't the TSB provide a procedure that checks the chains and guides for stretch? I thought the dealer checks this when doing the cam phaser repair?

No Modes and no spark plugs done. All factory. Sluggishness no(Had a 6.2 Chevy walk away from me on the highway LOL) but maybe a misfire on hard acceleration, feels like a little miss sometimes.

I've had a P0420 code for 10k miles now - i keep clearing it keeps coming back. Pretty sure one of my cats is bad too - this started at around 10k miles. Need to bring the truck in. Last dealer tired to blame the cat inefficiency code on my intake

No, as there haven’t been concerns with timing chain stretch on these engines. Gen 1 EcoBoosts had a build window of a couple years where the phasers were stretching the chain; a TSB was released to replace the phasers and chain. The timing drive components on the Gen 2 are completely unrelated and use a more robust design. What symptom did you have with the phasers?

Oh. I swear that people here were getting timing chains checked when cam phaser work was done. I thought a few had stretched chains and others didn't... There was a measurement procedure.

SSM 48168 - 2017-2018 F-150, 2018-2019 Expedition/Navigator - 3.5L EcoBoost - Ticking/Tapping Or Rattle Type Noise On Start Up After A Cold Soak
Some 2017-2018 F-150 vehicles built on or before 10-Jul-2018 and 2018-2019 Expedition/Navigator vehicles built on or before 8-Apr-2019 equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine may exhibit a ticking, tapping, or rattle type noise from the top front cover area of the engine that last 2-5 seconds on initial start-up after a cold soak. This may be due to a worn variable cam timing (VCT) unit. A TSB is expected to be published 4th quarter of 2019. In the interim, replace all 4 VCT units and update the powertrain control module (PCM) calibration. Do not replace timing chains, tensioners, guides or other timing related components unless inspection clearly identifies a concern. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01. Claim the labor required to replace VCTs using published labor operations and PCM programming using M-time. Monitor OASIS for updates.

Update, after a month of waiting on parts they got my truck in and replaced the cam phasers and the one cat. No timing chains or tensioners. Truck runs fine and it took two days for repair. That's all.
