How are you liking the transfer case?

I really like the blending of Part-Time 4WD and AWD.

There really is no mechanical components unique to 2WD mode.

By that, I mean power is sent out the forward yoke in two ways.

Transferred by the Torque on demand clutch pack in 4WD auto mode and these are always driven,

in 2WD mode it just does not electrically apply force to the clutch.

The second way is the conventional 4WD mode by engaging the dog-ring and locking the front and rear output shafts together. The lockup between the front and rear shafts is like lock on what us old guys call a full time 4WD T-case. Most of the time 4 low locked center differential..

On that landcruiser I had a simple wiring mod made the center diff lock work in AWD high range. It also had e-lockers in both axles.

I'll reference this about the 2G system.

https://www.sae.org/news/2020/03/ford-raptor-unique-front-driveline

"TODs are really good on road, and they can be very capable for high speed, intense desert running, but they have some limitations in terms of the clutch capacity,”

Which is why "Baja" mode is what it is. Locking up to take the load off the clutches. It would probably be faster in TOD mode but wear the clutch fast. Reading up on it, I'm not going to try to swap a 2G t-case into a 1G.

"In its Baja Mode, the Raptor uses the transfer case to mechanically lock the driveline into 4Hi and the customer can enable the locking the rear differential at all speeds for added tractive capability"

However, if actually getting air in not near the mall baja driving the shock loading on a locked up front to rear transfer case can break things.

This is why the AWD trophy trucks run T-cases like the PT4 with the unlocker. Basically a sprag. When you come down from big air front wheels first the rate vehicle speed my be much faster than the wheel speed is after they have been up there a while.

The locker mode enables 4WD to work in reverse.

I am a fan of the TOD transfer case as well. It’s nice to be able to engage 4A in inclement weather; with the torque of these trucks and an empty bed, it’s very easy to spin the rear tires on wet roads.

Extremely happy with it so far, just saw first snow (after not having lived somewhere with snow for a decade). This was the feature I missed most when i went from a GMC Sierra to a 2011 Raptor. And this implementation seems far superior to the GM AutoTrac.

Only issue that bugs me is entirely non-mechanical, i.e., the way the drive-mode adjustment will shift it out of 4WD, even when the new drive mode "supports" the specified 4wd mode, it still insists on putting it in the *default*. So changing to Sport mode forces the truck into 2H and then you have to put it back in 4A. Got a big surprise when I learned that, thinking I was still in 4WD.

I like how it has a center lockable differential and low-range.

For a regular pickup or SUV, the TOD clutch pack is great.

The best Trucks I have ever had were Toyota's and Fords.

If the Raptor is going to stay hardcore and not just soften up and be just marketing...

I really think the raptor T case should have a Torsen Tq biasing center differential for "AWD" mode, no clutches to kill, a dog ring, and shift fork to completely disengage the front drive, also a center differential lock.

Oh snap that sounds like what Toyota did with a T-case in their trucks..

In the raptor, look at the real AWD baja trucks and put in a sprag that will prevent air time in whoops from stretching the chain until it hangs low like Mr T. Tie it's lock mode with center diff lock and if the PCM sees speed, steering inputs and whoops, unlock it overide.

Also keep the rear differential an E-locker but instead of open or locked, make it a Torsen or locked. That is basically the eaton e locker.

Also, do that eatpn torsen e-locker to the front.

A friend saw what I was doing on the track on a superbike and what I was doing with high end sports cars.. He also knew I grew up driving in MN on ice.

So he thought I would not crash it if he let me drive his high hp AWD rally car. A quaife center diff (like a torsen)... I think the front and rears diffs were quaife too.

The front-rear and center torque biasing diffs package is awesome the car reacted to changes in traction faster and more predictably than any electronic system. Holy Hoonigan-ry
