Gen1 vs Gen2 mod/upgrade potential and cost

Sync 3 can be installed in the 13/14 trucks.

6.2L is the base gas engine in the Superduty trucks for the last 10+ years. I never hear of any issues with them. There has been a couple guys with broken valve springs on here lately, but these things are essentially bulletproof. If it makes it to 50K- it'll go 500K. Meaning, only engines will defective parts will fail and they always go early.

The one advantage the Gen 2 will have is weight.

There's a stretch where a group of us hit with some bumps/jump.

Even the Gen 1's with 3.0's + don't take it as well as a Gen 2 with stock suspension. The gen 2 just glides over parts where the Gen 1 trucks fight the terrain.

That being said, I've told myself twice I was going to go to a Gen 2, yet here I am in another Gen 1, with no regrets.

What power levels are you shooting for? Mod pricing, the Gen 2 will be a lot cheaper to get power due to being already FI. Now if you can find a gen 1 that's already boosted then that comment is void. A simple tune/intercooler upgrade will give you a nice jump in power in a Gen 2 and not set you back 7k+.

The 6.2L is a stout engine as mentioned above. I boosted my SCAB and made 525rwhp(cold dyno night) and it was a fun truck. I saw the new owner rocking it a few weeks ago. The weak points when you go boosted is the oil pump gear(potentially) and pistons once you really start wanting to up the boost.

A N/A 6.2L will not gain you much power for headers/intake/tune. They are well air flowing stock. Headers are only worth it if you want that sound.
A gen 2 will gain more with downpipes/intake/tune.

Hey! don’t be calling the old girl heavy lol in my defense we hit that jump with close to 400lbs of gear in the bed haha

Sorry if this has been covered or is just so obvious it hasn't been worth discussing, but I'm in the initial stages of trying to find my next truck and have narrowed it down to either a 2014 or 2017 Raptor.

I thoroughly enjoy working on my vehicles and doing my own upgrades and was wondering about the potential of each of the engines.

For bolt-ons - exhaust, CAI, headers, etc. - are the performance gains pretty equal? I can only assume (of course) that when it comes to substantial upgrades, the 6.2l would ultimately be cheaper. You could throw a SC on the Gen1 where as you'd probably have to replace the turbos on the Gen2, and even then they'd have to be a lot larger and a lot more expensive.

I don't know if I'd ever get to that point, so if the costs and upgrades are pretty close to one another for the more basic stuff then that helps take one thing off the table. It would then boil down to the grumble of the V8 vs the more aggressive look of the Gen2 - unless you can do that on the Gen1 as well!

Any insight or experience would be greatly appreciated, and my apologies again if this has been covered.
Mods get expensive no matter the truck. IMO take the trucks Engine performance the way it is and spend the time and money on the suspension. Also if you can find a truck with some of the big suspension parts already done. Those kits can get super pricey and better let someone else take the big hit and you reap the benefits. Just don’t be scared of having to potentially have the shocks rebuilt it is a realitivly painless process.

I lead up to that my modded gen1 is going up for sale...

I personally just went through what you're thinking. I had a 2019 but then decided to buy a 2014.

Absolutely 0 regrets and so glad I did. The way the truck stands today, I believe it can fully out perform my 2019(outside of speed) offroading and I'm still only all in at half the cost.

Haha. Your truck performed well there. I was honestly impressed with the 39"s and the gear you had in the rear.

But to me even the white Gen 1 just seemed like it fought the terrain more when getting to that jump spot.

So I think the general consensus here is to get a Gen 1. I've been keeping an eye out for a 2014 as of late.

I have no problems doing suspension work, engine work, etc. myself, but like you said if I can find it already done I'm all for it. The only problem I'm running into with slightly older, modded raptors A) they have a TON of miles, like 150k+, or B) if they have lower miles, whoever is selling it is charging an arm and a leg. There are a few Roush Raptors in my area that seem to be decently priced but again, they're pushing 150k+ miles, and I'd wager they're rough miles at that.

If it's in good shape, I don't know if I'd actually mind driving a higher mileage truck but I'd want to go over it with a fine tooth comb.

I know $40k for a 2014 is realistic. $30k and below is what would let me convince my wife to pull the trigger sooner rather than later and give me a little pocket money to mod/fix things, and there are a handful in my area but pushing a ton of miles.

Out of curiosity, why are you selling your Gen 1?

The big thing i have seen about high mile trucks is where they came from. Some southeast trucks are in amazing shape vs some lower mile westcoast/ northern trucks.

So im selling mine because im ready to move to the next build. similar to you i like the look of the gen2 but love the nostalgia of the gen1 and big v8. So i am going to build out a 2017 FRaptor(fake raptor), SC 5.0 long travel front linked rear, caged, new glass...

mine is a 2012 96K miles, and just about every mod you would want. 39s icon wheels, icon stage 4 suspension, adv fiberglass all around, bumpers, lights, tie rods... there is a whole build thread on it here. id be somewhere around 45k obo....

Paid $33k for a ~70k miles Special Edition Bone Stock 2014. Be patient and you'll find one

Wow, awesome! Was it here or local? Craigslist/marketplace? I'm also assuming it was direct and not through a dealership.

@PorterW1111, that sounds pretty cool and might be an option potentially? I really do enjoy working on cars.
