I have a 2017 Gen 2 with about 60k miles.

Whenever I put it in normal 2 wheel drive a strange noise comes up on the driver's left side. It sounds and feels like the 4wd is trying to engage (almost a grinding feeling). It always eventually gets louder and feels like it snaps forward like something slipped and then the noise goes away for a while but always returns in about 30 seconds to a couple of minutes.

This usually always happens at highway cruising speeds. Only in 2WD though. The problem never occurs in 4A.

The problem arose after I took it mudding pretty hard.

I've cleaned all of the mud out and I am still having the issue.

The dealership didn't know what to say so I said screw it ill fix it myself. I would really appreciate any help y'all could give me!!!!!!

I encountered this same issue the other day coming home from a long road trip. Mine is a 2017 with 48k. I've got an appt with my local dealer this week, but of course I haven't been able to replicate since calling.

The concern you’re experiencing is the result of a loss of vacuum to one or both Integrated Wheel Ends (IWE). There is an IWE at each front wheel, which consists of a vacuum operated diaphragm that moves a collar over a toothed hub to engage the axle to the wheel hub.

The system is fully engaged when no vacuum is present, and disengages when vacuum is applied to the diaphragm. When vacuum is weak due to a system issue, the hubs can partially engage in 2WD, resulting in a grinding sound.

Possible causes include a leaking IWE, a leaking vacuum line, a faulty check valve, or a faulty solenoid or vacuum reservoir.

Ford released TSB 20-2028 to assist dealers in diagnosing the system. Diagnosis is relatively straightforward; much of it can be performed with a simple vacuum pump.
