my bet is they will approve coverage for the phaser alone, not the parts list from the ssm which included cams, possibly the timing chain. This is the business model these companies use to make money. Be prepared for a settlement offer.

It’s not always; ex.: you have a catastrophic failure on a pristine, bone stock vehicle with zero mitigating factors. They likely delay, but cover. Here, i don’t know how stock your truck is, but, you can bet they’re angling to have reduced coverage here.

You should insist that the mechanic working on the vehicle be a certified Ford tech - other certifications notwithstanding.
The reality is this isn’t rocket science, but every engine has its intricacies and you don’t want something stupid happening because the tech working on the truck was not familiar.
yeah Im fully anticipating a settlement offer at this point, fortunately the write up from ford didnt include the cams and the majority of the $3k estimate was the phasers. the rest of the parts list Ford provided was the chain, gaskets, seals, bolts, etc. I have to go to the dealer later today to swap out my loaner for some reason so I'll have an opportunity to talk to them face to face. I've been insistent that a certified Ford tech do the actual repair and the dealership didnt have any issues with that, but warranty might.

we'll see how it goes later today.

note: only engine mod is an S&B CAI

figure I'll keep updating for those of us buying used Raptors, especially if an aftermarket/non-OEM warranty is offered...

so I'll be Raptor-less for at least another week..mopar tech is doing a full engine tear down today at the direction of the warranty advisor. suspect that'll take a day, if not two...from there they file the tech's report back to warranty and generally it goes one of two ways (per my service advisor), they either approve and move forward with the work or conditionally approve and send an inspector to validate the findings. I reiterated my concerns about having someone other than a certified Ford tech do any of the actual repair work and they agreed, even said they probably dont have the necessary tools and certainly not the parts. Anyway, they agreed that most likely they would sublet the work to the nearest Ford dealer to have the work done, so that's at least positive news.

personal victory, they agreed to loan me a Ram so at least I dont have to drive this silly Jeep anymore...or worse..

It sounds like a non-Ford Certified Tech will be doing the tear down. Is that not considered a major part of the job? o_O

you would think...

expressed my concerns about that as well...at this point its all being directed by the Mopar Warranty...if they screw it up, their problem.

just got an update from the service mgr...mopar warranty has agreed to approve the claim but they insisted that a mopar tech tear down the engine to identify each individual part # causing the issue, even though I had a Ford tech provide all that information already...

suppose I need to focus on the positive here, at least the warranty seems to be ok with covering the costs.

That's a new one on me. Typically the warranty company, regardless of brand, will have the OEM technician tear down the assembly to the point of failure. Then the inspector from the warranty company will come to the dealership, verify the mode of failure, and sign off on the repair. I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer was misinterpreting the process there..but regardless, at least it's being addressed under your warranty.

yeah seemed odd to me as well...even the FCA dealership was unsure why warranty refused the claim from Ford, guess at that point it was just easier for them to handle the warranty to ensure I was taken care of...I did just buy it from them a month ago...

good news is I had the opportunity to talk to the service mgmt and the finance mgr at the dealership last night and expressed all of my concerns, dropped the lemon law threat and it was impressive how quickly they spelled out their step by step plan to resolve this issue. they've already coordinated with their partner Ford dealership down the road and have every intention of sending it over there for the repair itself. the service mgr took the time to walk me through their shop and had the tech walk me through what he was doing (as he was removing the valve covers) so I feel better about this non-Ford tech doing the tear down...actually I think he might even be more thorough as he was covering all the bases and looking for additional wear or damage caused by the phaser issue. more good news is that the mopar inspector is local to the dealership so no concerns with getting him in quickly.

best case scenario, they said they'd have my truck on a flatbed to the Ford dealership by the end of the week, worst case early next week.

good news day for me...mopar warranty tentatively approved the repairs pending the inspection which should happen tomorrow and then off to Ford for the repair work itself :banana-mario:

took a few more days than I wouldve like but the inspector showed up yesterday and filed his report, warranty gave preauthorization for my dealer to contact the local ford and get the estimate written up. truck should be on a flatbed to ford tomorrow morning.

interesting note...I asked what the inpsector's report said, dealer said they dont get a copy of it (not sure about that but oh well) but gave me an overview of their findings...they would be replacing most of the components in the VCT system that my local ford had already recommended (phasers, chain, etc) but also said they had recommended the PCM be replaced as well...either that was a miscommunication or misuse of an acronym or my PCM is really being replaced..

The Service Message instructs the technician to update the PCM with a revised calibration. That may be what they were referring to, since the PCM will be listed on the RO as a component for the repair but with a quantity of "0".
