I have a 2018 with about 23k miles and still discovering things and not. My question is when i plug my phone into either usb port the apple car play automatically comes on and in carplay i'm not able to press the talk button on the steering wheel to ask to change radio channels or text etc. When unplugged i can do these things thru sync. I actually only like carplay for the waze screen to come on the console, other than that much prefer sync. is there a way to be plugged in and be able to do this? really wish they had put a source button on the wheel instead of having to navigate thru the screen. thanks.

no.

You can "plug in" and not turn on Apple car Play......and still be able to use Ford Voice Control, but your phone screen will not show up on the display. Think of your usb device as just being another audio source. Sort of a waste.

When Apple Car Play is on, Ford Voice Control, and Ford Maps are turned off, and you are forced to use Siri, ans waze/apple maps/google maps. Siri cannot control anything on the truck, like heating and cooling. Again. Sort of a waste.

Sadly, you have to decide...apple car play, or no apple car play.

I thought ford update SYNC 3 to use the Waze app on your phone via SYNC so you could use voice command and all other features of SYNC?

There was an early update a few years ago that allowed Waze to mirror on the Sync screen as an "app"; the aspect ratio was distorted and it often froze. It also over heavily taxed the phone; mine would get extremely hot. Apple Carplay and Android Auto work completely differently, and from my experience - at least with Carplay - it that it's pretty flawless.

Not sure why OPs talk button doesn't work with Carplay...mine opens up Siri and prompts for voice commands.

what i'm saying is that when i plug in my phone to either usb port up front apple car play automatically comes on and when i say commands like "xm channel 7" or "temperature 72" it says unable to do so or something like that. i can do all these things when phone is unplugged therefore in sync mode. basically i believe you can't do any voice commands pertaining to the car in apple car play mode even when you plug in and press ford sync app on the display.
i'll try again maybe i'm doing something wrong.

If you push the Sync button/icon while in Carplay, it exits to a version of Sync that allows some sync controls/features, but not all. I still think Siri overrides the voice commands, but I haven't tried it in a while.
