Unfortunately after my first cam phaser repair I thought I was in the clear. Lately I thought I was hearing the faint start up rattle again. Every morning for the past week I could hear it getting louder and louder. Today it’s confirmed that it’s back to being how it was prior to the first phaser repair. About 5k miles since the last repair.

I would suspect it’s normal startup sounds. They can seem louder depending on air temp and humidity and other variables. If you can, take a video and post it. I believe the rattle is either loud or it isn’t. I don’t believe it’s a case of a progressive increase.

Do you have the part number that was installed on yours? How about a video?

Is it my understanding that on 19 and 20 models they have redesigned components so this issue is less common? or is this just achilles heel of this engine?

Do you still have the paperwork from the original replacement? Seeing the date for that and the repair part numbers would be helpful.

My "rattle" started around 24,000 miles on my 2018 model. I am scheduled to bring it in on Monday and the service rep put "cam phaser" on the confirmation email just by me describing the sound. Must be fairly common if the adviser's are familiar with the issue just by a description and not random freak occurrences like some are implying repeatedly.

The sound has gotten progressively louder over the past few months and is very noticeable every morning. Even when I head out for lunch or on my drive home it makes the noise at startup now.

I am taking my 18' in Monday as well for the phasers. I am thankful that I found this forum when I did or I probably would have thought the sound was normal. I suspect the 18' I bought just a month ago had the problem from the beginning and maybe that is why it was traded it. When I called my dealership they said they were aware of the problem and revised part numbers and would fix it right away. The driver side seat warmer also doesn't work only after about a week of having the truck. With all that being said I am absolutely in love with the truck.

My build date was 22Feb17 and I am currently trying to get mine replaced. 9,000 miles out of warranty so we’ll see what happens. No mods at all.
