Yep, I’m at it again. Helping dopes like me learn more about the world of trucks. There were some incredibly helpful replies in the thread about truck capacity and I learned a lot and appreciate the helpful replies.

As I toy with building a Tremor, I see for the first time choices in rear end gearing.

Attention: I am a math dummy, thoroughly and completely, so please dumb it down.

I believe if I pick the tremor package the choices or gearing are narrowed down or grayed out.

of course the Raptor is only available with one rear end, or differential if that’s the right phraseology.

I’m all ears. What do the numbers mean? What rear end do you want, aside from one you may have seen in Playboy?

inn the old days with 3 and 4 speed transmissions....you were rather limited. you either chose a high rear gear ratio like 4:10 which means the engine would spin at high rpm's in order to keep it in the "power band" and faster acceleration.

or, of something like a 2:88 that would keep the engine rpm's lower and give better fuel economy.

those #'s started to become less important as 6, 7, and 8 speed transmissions come around.

specifically with the raptor and 10 speed transmissions......you can have a very high rear end gear ratio so you get the benefits of fast acceleration because the 1st 5 gears our our 10 speed are set up for torque and acceleration, and gears 4-8 are for mid cruising. gears 9 and 10 are straight up overdrive. low rpm's at highway speed for good fuel economy.

now a days...dont worry too much about it. if you are given the choice......higher rear end # is for more towing or fast acceleration. lower numbers are for economy at the expense of towing and acceleration.

In your example You realize of course that 410 gears are lower than 288s, right?

lower / higher....i never could keep that straight......but my example wording is correct.

"higher / lower ....I could never keep that straight" ... LOL yet you're doling out advice with errors in almost every sentance.

Negative, you refer to 410s as a high gear ratio. It's a relatively low ratio especially compared to the very high 288s in your example.

Corrected to "gear"

what is this high year ratio that you are doling our advice on?
