Performance Tune with Warranty

The part were I feel it's cut and dry is that I purchased the warranty from the dealer at point of sale - which to me is stating they are certifying the vehicle as it stands, is worthy of the 100k mile warranty.

If the language on the warranty states that only genuine Ford parts are covered (or something of that nature), then it really doesn't matter if you feel that it should cover the aftermarket stuff that's on the vehicle at the point of sale. I don't think it matters if it's new or used. If you bought a Raptor with a dealer added custom moonroof for example, it's not going to be covered under the standard warranty.

I would agree that the dealership has some responsibility to make sure you fully understand what is and isn't under warranty, but I wouldn't want make assumptions based on what I feel should be covered.

It's not what I "feel" is covered, it's that they sold it to me "certified" and there is a tune on it.

Disclaimer, I'm not really comfortable with the level of the average Ford mechanic (my bias comes from the process of purchasing this truck) and I'm sure they didn't really think to look for a tune before they deemed it "sellable".

Boy, this thread takes me back.. I used to own a 2002 Lightning and there were a large number of threads and posts like in this one.. my advice is that if you dont want to lose your warranty then keep it fairly stock. If you mod it then be prepared to have your warranty voided. I heard stories how Ford would send guys out to the track and copy the VIN of the L's there and put them in the system to make sure their warranty was voided. I am not a white as snow do gooder, but rather just stating the facts as they are.. why take the chance? Ford lost a lot of $$ on the Lightning because of guys modding them, racing them, breaking them, unmodding them and then demanding the dealer fix them for free. Ford has learned its lessons

That would be monumentally stupid. Back in the 90’s, GM lost a series of lawsuits on the F-body - camaro / firebird on customers who complained about poor performance from the 5.7. GM claimed abuse and it went to court. by and large, the customers prevailed with a central point being that GM was advertising 0-60 times in their sales brochures.

The Lightning was, at the time, “the fastest production pickup truck” ; paraphrasing.

Ford didn’t lose on the Lightning, in fact, they had a loyal fan base, but it was quite literally a “parts bin” truck with components sourced from available model lines, put together in a damn fine truck.

I remember ’99- ~’03(?) only had 4 threads holding the plugs and they’d get spit sometimes. Trans had a ‘torque cut’ feature to prevent premature failure. and yeah, there were guys getting a little over the top with boost. It’s that way with any performance vehicle - customers are going to mod them.

No amount of QA testing survives contact with the customer.

Has anyone received a quoted install price from the their local dealer on the Roush CAI/tune? I've been waiting for one...going on 2 weeks.

that’s a good question....really good one, why? Well- my GH tune cost me like $600-$650 w- the device shipping tax etc. cost of a new HO 3.5 is reportedly $7k or there abouts. If the cost to get a “factory warrantied” tune that may or may not be actually warrantie is close to 1/2 the price of a brand new engine I wouldn’t even consider it since the odds are a tune isn’t going to cause an issue anyhow.

Isn't the Roush Tune/CAI $899 and install at dealer about $200?
