I would make sure that you discuss diminished value compensation since the insurance company is opting to fix it.

Some states have laws that put the claim/payout for such when you go to sell the vehicle, however, most insurance companies are happy to make the payment as part of the initial damage claim, granted you sign the paperwork that states you will not come back at a later date and ask for more.

Paying out now is in their best interest, as when you go to sell the vehicle as it gets to 4-5 years old the value hit to your vehicle will be a much higher % or dollar amount.

There isn't a starting place to negotiate necessarily. your insurance company will run a model based on the damage to be repaired and research comps with similar damage, then averaging the deltas between repaired trucks and pristine examples. then they will give you a number.

I had a truck rear-ended by a drunk that was doing 60 mph ( i was stopped at a stoplight). I hadn't even made a payment yet.

Geico worked on my behalf and the drunk's insurance company wrote me a check for $5700 for diminished value on top of paying for the repairs, etc.

It did work out in my favor, as The accident showed as minor on the carfax when I traded it in.

Same thing happened to me on a brand new Jeep grand Cherokee. Had about 35-40,000 worth of damage and they did not total it off. I could only find one dealer that would even offer a trade offer, the other two around here didn’t even want it because it was branded as major damage. literally told me they would not take it on trade..One of those would not take it on trade was the biggest Ford dealer in the state.

if that's the case, you should have recourse with the insurance company. i'd say "unsellable" = 100% payout , whether it be "diminished value" or "total loss".

Worthless = total loss in my book.

you definitely need to fight with your insurance company for a diminished value payout. Your dealer maybe able to help you calculate what it should be. Each state has different laws and ways to calculate

Exactly 1 year before you posted this, I was rear ended in my 2018 supercrew. The guy who hit me was going 50+ mph and was driving a jeep rubicon while absolutely plastered drunk (with a steel lined front bumper). Anyways, I had a trailer hitch on, so the damage looked nothing worse than replacing the rear bumper. Well the next morning, i took a closer look and realized that my hitch receiver ripped through my underbody (popped my spare tire and bent frame). Living in North Carolina, any sort of frame damage means that the car is automatically totaled. What im trying to say is that your incident will definitely lead to a total loss in my opinion, assuming you live in a state with laws like NC. (You WANT it to be totaled). Good Luck.

He already updated the thread and insurance did not total it. FYI, for anything more than a minor tap, having a hitch in the receiver is more of a damage multiplier than any sort of protection.

Yes the truck is in the process of being fixed. From my research replacing a segment of the frame is a very common practice. Fingers crossed all goes well.

The $30k repair estimate doesn’t surprise me. Best of luck, finding a reputable body shop is the key.

Why does everyone always say “it will never be the same”. That’s not the case today. If repairs are done properly and everything damaged is repaired, well, your right it won’t be the same...it will be brand new again!
