Hey guys! I'm new to the forum.
I've been in love with raptors since 2010 when I first read about them in a magazine. Since then they were always just above my price range until now. I found a 2012 6.2 super crew cab for $21,000 with 150,000. I went and test drove it and checked it out. Pretty clean a small ding on the tail gate, some rust starting to bubble the paint on the bottom of the passenger rocker but still solid. The worst is probably the front bed support has some pretty bad rot. Other then that it has just the standard equipment. No heated seats no cameras. Stock wheels exhaust chopped and turned down right after the muffler. My question is would you be worried with 150,000 miles? Should I jump on the deal or keep looking for less miles?

Pass on this one. Find a rust free vehicle. One that has not seen a rust belt winter. Once the rot starts it really can’t be stopped.

Find one from Atlanta, GA or Portland, OR. I would stay away from TX vehicles due to the hurricanes.

I’ve personally purchased a ‘93 F250 and a ‘97 F350 from Portland and they are both rust free.

Do not buy a truck with rust. First you’ll tell yourself it’s not that bad and you’ll get it fixed eventually. 2 years later, you finally get around to having it fixed only to find it 3x as bad. Then you’ll be surprised to learn most body shops won’t bother with rust repair. You’ll finally find one at an estimate of 5k on a truck that’s now worth less than 15k.

The rust isnt a huge concern, I live in PA so I'm no stranger to it. I have a good buddy who owns a fabrication shop and already confirmed that he could cut out the bed support and weld a new one in place. And passenger rocker underneath the truck is fixable yet with some sanding and paint.

I should also note that the owner had the truck for 2 years, put 35,000 on it and never had the shocks rebuilt so that's something I would also need to do right away. Right?

Buy it, given the caveat that you will be able to afford a few things right away.

Take it to a mechanic before you agree to buy it, have them do a pre-purchase inspection. This usually costs around $100, they will put it on a lift and check things like wheel bearings and steering system, and look more thoroughly for leaks or any major issues.

Get the rust taken care of immediately, all of it! Get some sort of prevention in place, be it undercoat, lineX, whatever. Make sure you understand what this is going to cost and you can afford it.

Rebuild the shocks, plan $800-1000 for just the rebuild. Be prepared to replace any other parts that are bad in the steering and suspension at the same time, this could amount to nothing or another 1-2k.

If you can handle getting that done you should be good to go. Just remember your buying a used truck with some miles, maintenance is going to be more than a low mileage or newer vehicle, don't get in over your head on the payment, if something needs work you have to be able to pay for it.

Sounds to me like that $21K deal is going to get to $30K real fast.....Bring it to a trusted Mechanic and get a good PPI done on it...not Inspection the kids at the dealer do to tell you your tire pressure and wipers are OK...get a full inspection done...its the best $100+- you will ever spend on an expensive vehicle like the Raptor....I bought mine sight unseen, never drove it,shipped to me....had a PPI done on it,called them up and they told me its 99% out of 100%...That $110 sure gave me a good nights sleep...lol
