How hard is it?

Hey all, I am looking at the Baja Designs Pro fog light kit for my 2019. I have very little experience with any type of vehicle electrical work. I have read up here and watched a bunch of you tube videos. Is it really that easy to hook up for a novice or would it be best to find a local installer? I don’t mind tackling the work and would enjoy it, however, I obviously want to make sure it is done right. It just seems so easy but I haven’t connected wires like that before. Move forward based on ease of install or call the pros? Any other novice electrical guys do this and can provide your experience would be appreciated. Great site here, thanks all!

I am not a mechanic and have no training at all, but I like to learn and do what I can to further my knowledge and skill set. That being said, the install is very simple. About the only skill you need is to be able to crimp connectors onto bare wires on the upfitter connections. Or, if you use the side tap that is provided with the Raptor upfitter harness then only need to be able to squeeze a set of pliers. I personally don't like side taps, instead choose to go with waterproof connectors like Weatherpack or Deutsch. The light end is a simple Weatherpack plug and comes pre-terminated with the harness that comes with the kit.

The above will get you up and running and is all that is necessary. You can get a little more detailed by soldering the connectors, heat shrink tubing them, etc., but that is just taking it a notch further in quality and potentially adds a bit more weather protection, FWIW. There is really no reason to pay an installer to do this unless you just don't have the time. Plus it allows you to get familiar with the install should you want to change things up in the future.

It really only gets more complicated if you want to run a bunch of relays or power distribution blocks, but those are for specific needs such as specific triggers and/or large numbers of high current lights, such as big light bars, etc.

Installing a set of lights like this isn’t real tough. The brackets are all bolt on and the wiring couldn’t be much easier especially if you’re using wiring harnesses like our Raptor specific one that is basically plug and play. The only real wiring you’d need to do is connect the harness the trucks aux switch wires. There’s quite a few write ups and videos on the process. Most people, any those that don’t do this stuff much, can complete a fog light install in 2 to 4 hours.

Having just installed reverse lights from @FordRaptorLights.com , I can attest that it's easier to install lighting than it may appear at first. I was rather cautious though and contacted @FordRaptorLights.com several times with questions, and they were always quick and helpful with answers. The lights are working great, and I'm going to complete the install but hooking it up to to upfitter switches this weekend (weather permitting).

As already pointed out, there are instructions and helpful videos out there. One thing to remember, as pointed out, is there isn't just one way to do these things, and people are going to prefer certain methods over others. That means the how-tos will likely be a little 'loose' at times allowing for you to make your own decisions. I also have a couple neighbors nearby that work on their own cars, so if I ever do get stuck, I have a life line.

If you can use a wire stripper/cutter you are good to go. The connections can be wrapped together (lineman splice) and heat shrinked - no special crimping or soldering needed. Agree that it will take you 4+ hours your first time.

I did the Rigid Design fogs last year at this time it wasn’t complicated took about 4-5 hours to complete only because I didn’t want to rush it hardest part for me was attaching the individual lights to the brackets as there was very little room to use tools under there as for the wiring I used the lineman’s splice method with heat shrink on top. I’m just across border from Detroit and s as m often over in Michigan a lot let me know if you need help if your not far from Detroit

I bought the same kit. Took mine to car toys and they did an excellent job for a reasonable rate...Did the rear lights at the same time....I also had them connect them to my high beam and the rocker switches..ymmv

It's not that hard. The hardest part is just getting the lights bolted in, as there's a lot of bolts (3 pairs of lights = 6 sets of bolts). You just need 2 wrenches (or a socket + wrench) so you can bolt things in. Then aligning the lights so you're aiming them where you want. And that's it.
