OK,so been reading all the posts about changing the spark plugs on 2014 Raptor (Shelby w/Whipple SC) and slowly building up the nerve to tackle the job, along with buying parts and tools needed....So far I picked up the Flex-Head Gearwrench 3/8" ratchet and their 3 piece swivel 5/8" spark plug socket set...pretty sure whatever else I need is in the tool chest.....
Also have purchased the 16 plugs...talked to Shelby and they told me they used the NGK-6510...

Tools and Plugs set me back $200 so far,so figure the do-it-yourself job will save me $400-$500 over dealer prices and I'll still have my $75 in tools.. :)

I'm still about 10/20K out since I only have 55K on it.....but for sure not waiting till recommended 100K.

So my question....are you guys also changing the Wires and Ignition Coil-Packs when doing the plugs, even if old ones are good?? And what brand are you using..?? Totally confused with the coil-packs with prices ranging from 39.95 for 8 .. to $80+ for ONE.....$39.95 to $600+ is a big spread.....Also have seen where you buy the Wires and Coil Pack "pellets" to repair instead of replace....and a set of Wires with the repair pellets is running $275...

Suggestions??? What the usual way of doing....?,just change it all out once your under the hood anyway?

Coil packs, no. If one of those fails, you'll know right away via misfire code. Wires - yes. I initially did just the plugs, then went back and did the wires later, and I think I noticed a bigger difference in idle with the wire replacement. I recommend the AC Delco replacements - they come with the Christmas tree holder clips preinstalled.

We have a package for the kit that includes plugs and wires under our maintenance section:
https://www.freedommotorsports.us/c...-ford-raptor-maintenance-recommendations.html
Promo code: FRFMAINTENANCE11 for the package.

I can also provide a discounted FRF price on just wires too.
Most folks are replacing both as this package has become very popular.
You will find that the existing resistors will be green and corroded, personally I wouldn't re-use them but if you do, clean them up and make sure and use dielectric grease. With the Granatelli performance wires, they replace the resistor with a 0hm solid pellet and their wires have a ring on both ends to eliminate the interference that the normal resistors deal with. I personally replaced the wires because you might find that some will tear and I wanted performance wires vs the OEM. I did end up buying brand new coil boots (includes the spring) as I had one rip and they were extremely dirty on mine. I can package those with wires if needed.

Hope that helps

THANKS..!! Yeah, figured if the coil-pack went bad,you would know it...figured I'd change more for preventive maintenance, since they would be out already......
You happen to have a link to the AC Delco...?

Hi Rick...
Thanks for the info.....
So in reality, its just those "pellets/resistors" I'd need to change out....sort of a Coil rebuild?? rather than buying entire coil? Guess I'll have to take a look at mine, but would figure with 55K,they should still be OK.....So then it would be the Grantelli Wire set & Pellets your showing for $299..and I'm good to go? See there are "options" with the wires.....KEVLAR BOOTS ? and Silicone covers on wires? Really needed for a "lightly" used, highway driver Raptor?
And coil boots? is that different from the entire coil....
Your suggestion for my app.....? Dont want to tear it all up and not have whats needed....but also know you dont know what your going to screw up till you dig in...lol

Don't use solid pellets unless you have the performance wires to go with them. When you get the NGK coil boot replacements, they come with the spring and new resistors so it you wanted to stick with the NGK 6510's and OEM wires, and get those boot kits, you would be all set. You only need 8 coil boot kits as those are used on top only. The kits are not that expensive, so to me it was worth replacing. Get them at Rock Auto, part NGK 58976.

Yes there are options on the Granatelli's. I would recommend the hi-temp silicone w/kevlar boots with a supercharger and headers since it runs hotter, not really needed with stock. They can handle 1200 degrees (your engine doesn't get that hot but nice to have some rated that high). The regular ones they have are rated to 500 degrees. Regardless, these upgraded wires meets and exceeds OEM so you will be fine either way. Most folks with superchargers do it for peace of mind due to the heat.

Get with me on pricing as we offer these for less for FRF members if you are interested in going that route.

Hi Rick...
GREAT INFO....I'm learning little by little.....OK...now I'm understanding the coil pack and the "pellets" after seeing photo of the Boot-Kit...I assume you dont sell them...looked at Rock Auto and they only have 2,but not in hurry so will wait till they get them in....
Understand about the Granatelli wires....just need to wrap my head around over $400 for plug wires....guessing the 8 pellets they include is not much of a factor in the price....since I'd only need the wires if I go with the NGK Boot-Kits.....
Need to check out your site more and see if there any other items and maybe we can make a deal...I'll PM you once I figure it all out.
Do you sell any of the Oil Catch Cans....looking for Passenger side...
Thanks

Yes we do sell the coil boot kits but I cannot beat the Rock Auto price, hence why I mentioned them plus they offer 5% off. They might not have enough but if you order, they usually should have them in about a week or two. This is on our website but will post this here for you too on the Granatelli Performance wires:
  • Direct OEM replacement, exceeds OEM specifications, OBD-II computer safe
  • Increase power to the spark plug up to 400% over stock
  • Adds up to 15HP (normally aspirated) & 35HP (s/c, turbo, & nitrous)
  • 0 Ohm resistance, no RFI / EMI interference thanks to patented protector ring
  • Patented* design works with all fuel injection systems, street cars and race cars
  • Solid stainless connector cable with stainless snap lock spark plug connectors
  • High temperature silicone boots, 8MM jacket with fiberglass-reinforced braid resists temperatures up to 500 degrees
Here is a video instructions of installing them on a stock motor and you will see the pellets and the coil boots:
BTW: In the video, those boots are clean. When I did mine, they were not and I ended up ripping one getting it off as the rubber is on the hot engine and isn't as flexible as new over time.

Yes, we sell Catch cans. I would recommend the JLT but we also sell UPR

I agree, unless you really want to spend some money (and/or want NGK coils) I wouldn't replace coil packs. I had one fail, or rather just arc to the engine block (no code or noticeable loss of power), and just replaced that one with a Motorcraft from Rockauto. Wires if you can afford them or find a problem, I elected to hold off when I swapped plugs...

Here is a video instructions of installing them on a stock motor and you will see the pellets

I wondered where those little bastards were, read about them but never saw them 'til now, thanks Rick. And I still want a set of those plug wires, I'll get them from you when I can swing it.
