Cam Phaser/ Engine Failure Poll

Many, if not most, cars have some recurring failure point that manifests in a minority of motors and gets magnified on the forums. The F80 M3 forums have tons of threads about a spun crank hub failure, and there are now after market “fixes” available to prevent it. There are lots of people over there wringing their hands over it. But as others have said, the reality is that few F80s get it. I’m not going to forego getting a car or truck I love over exaggerated forum reports. I tuned my M3 and I’m tuning the Raptor too.

That said, there are certain cars I like but wouldn’t buy, but that’s because the manufacturer has a well earned reputation for poor reliability. The Alfa Giulia comes to mind. I love the way the Quadrifolio drives and looks, but no thanks. Ford does not fall into this category, IMO. Do they have reported problems? Sure. But they sell a shit ton of F150s and EcoBoost motors, so reported problems are inevitable. Show me a manufacturer who has not had them (Toyota and Nissan have had some doozies). My wife’s Flex had no issues, and my dad’s F150 has been the same. Anecdotal? Yes, but so are the reports on this forum.

I agree Ford sells a shit ton of F150s. Guess which F150s end up with $$$$ repairs more often than others? *Cough* 3.5L EB engines *Cough*. Sorry, for the coughing, I've been feeling a bit rattely during my last few startups. Now go ahead and guess.

*cough* is there actual data for this statement that you can point to? And is there data for the actual percentage that fail? In fairness, I would expect more failures from HO engines than with low output NA slugs.

I agree. I would like to see some hard numbers. Until then, it's just a WAG, and adding to the hysteria.

A few years ago, we owned a couple ecodiesel Rams, there was a guy on the forum that worked for Ram that actually pulled, and posted, the number of "replacement" engines available nationwide at any given time. Some people were spinning a main bearing and throwing rods, same hysteria. At least those numbers kinda sorta pointed toward some numerical evidence, maybe. Assuming each of those engines was going into a problem vehicle and not going into a boat or whatever.

If someone has access to the number of cam phaser "repair kits" available, and if they are specific to the Raptor, it would be interesting to see how many are making their way into these trucks vs how many Raptors are running around. Until then I don't believe anyone knows and is likely trying to vilify the engine, to make themselves feel better about not owning a "problem child."

I do feel bad for the people who have issues. If I had to do mine more than once, I would probably get into a new one. 31k, so far so good, and I don't EXPECT to have the problem.

it is like .00001% of the run.......shit happens........not a systemic issue with the motor. make 10,000,000 motors in 10 years and there will be some defects.

That's what him and his bro Sasquatch are here for.
If it wasn't for these forums I wouldn't be aware of the cam phaser issues. I know 6 people locally with Gen2's and none of us have had any issues.

I'm seriously bummed about my Cam Phaser repair. I love my Raptor and feel like someone shot my dog over this. I'm trying to decide whether having the problem once predisposes the engine to repeated failure. No troll here. I really need some good info so I can decide whether to trust that the failure will not recur. Can anyone tell me whether it is "As good as new" after the repair? Is there any upgrade for the 2019 in this area?

Yes, it has. From what I have read, there is not a new design to fix these. For those who have the failure, the same design is being put back in.
