Wanted to report in that I may be joining the club experiencing the rattle, with my 2018 SCREW manufactured 9/17 it occurs not only at startup but under conditions identical to TSB 18-2354. I'll be heading into the dealer this Thursday for diagnosis. Here is what mine sounds like.

You have something additional wrong. When they replace your engine (my guess) ask if you can buy it back in lieu of the core refund and how much, I am interesting in testing this one down.

Please if you don’t mind asking I’d appreciate it.

I'll certainly ask, any suggestions for encouraging them to replace the engine? The vehicle has been consuming about .5-.75 qt of oil every 1000 miles which I have had two different dealers claim is within specification.

So do you have a gen1?

If not that list is for gen1. These have 2 primary chains no secondary (if no one else mentioned this)

Thanks Ryan. That's funny! I pulled the list from another forum that said it was a Gen 2 and sent it to the service manager to get some action from Ford on ordering parts. Ford agreed to replace those parts! They never mentioned it. They have not sent me the parts list they actually ordered. I am going to see if I can get that today. If you have a parts list that would help the guys on this thread a lot. Thanks again for the help.

Word to the wise have them order parts before they open the motor up. These parts are constantly on backorder. I had to fight with the Dealership to do this.

I've only read to page 43 but wanted to chime in and say I'm having no rattles at all. Final week of 2018 production run, ~7.5K miles.

Mine does have the excessive oil consumption problem though. Appears to absorb (no smoke or smell) a quart of oil every 2-3 thousand miles. One reason I'm sticking with Mobile-1 instead of the more expensive brands.

So not sure if anyone is aware, but the raptor specific uses pistons with no oil drain backs on the 3 pcs ring set. It has the two scrapers and expanded but they use 100% of the oil to pull down the cylinder wall to lubricate skirts.

Then high volume oil squirters are designated to cool and lubricate the pin and hollow cast in oil galley pistonse256fe209d5b6081cb30cf8fe86e8ba3.jpg

The other piston is non raptor Gen2. c8a08dd1a9101dce797bf2a8d5fa53a5.jpgb3c12cfe6715888ab003d829db89c84c.jpg

Makes me wonder if this is somehow causing issues with oil consumption. Probably not but interesting facts

Maybe? I'd think that any oil on the skirts (piston or cylinder) would just end up back in the pan. The part that irritates and perplexes me is that not everyone experiences it, kind of like the can-o-coins. Engineering defects are usually wide-spread, these issues are sounding like a QA issue with a sub-contractor in that they are only affecting a relatively small subset.

But I have to confess that the newest motor I've torn down or built up was a 1973 351C, things were so much simpler back then. There was only one timing chain and it was ~10-12 inch loop, a solenoid was just used to trigger the starter, and the term "phaser" sounds more like Star Trek to an old-school gear head like me.

If crankcase pressure is high, rings could potentially be fluttering enough from the pressure in the case pushing against the ring backs. This will not only cause accelerated ring wear, but the poor ring seal which is the effect of the fluttering which can allow the oil to push past the top scraper ring, then past the Napier and up thru the top 1.5mm chrome compression ring.

That was hypothetical there and a loooooong shot, but have to think outside the box. I think it’s definitely going to be another reason people see oil consumption. Many times it is related to ring issues or bad valve stem seals. Just caught two bad seals myself on our gen1. 8e44807e08021c7c73502640343a7d34.jpga4d3993931695a0df073a08e5a9a916b.jpg
