2018-19 Poor Quality Control

I bought a 2018 last year 1K miles from home. I inspected the exterior, but not so much the interior. When I got home, the dash had scuffs deep in the dash, screw driver pry mark on the outside vent and a dent in the dash above the left air vent. The truck had 15 miles on it. The dealer in town said leave it alone, it's not worth fixing it. So I decided to eat the loss and trade for a 19.

1st truck I tried to buy came in off the truck with 15 miles. The color was agate black, extreme orange peel, crooked un-aligned doors, crooked front bumper, rusty rear axle. No deal.

2nd truck, same dealer, 3K more than 1st truck, 15 miles, steering wheel was centered to instrument panel, but steering wheel assembly was mounted crooked a $hit. Driver b pillars deep scratched, all rubber window trim pieces next to it had scratches, roof scratched, passenger door scratches all over. No deal.

3rd deal, same dealer, performance blue they would get from Autonation. I went inspected the truck Autonation before I signed. Truck diff look like it had been submerged in the ocean for week, solid orange rust, no visible paint on it, corrosion on aluminium skid plates, engine parts, extremely bad orange peel. No Deal.

4th deal attempted today at a dealer by my house. $500 more than the other dealers, but owe well it's the color I want. The dealer calls and says truck is in today. I go by to inspect the truck and it looks great. No orange peel, rust, doors aligned and then I get to the interior. The dash above the driver had 6 - 2 in cuts and abrasions worse than my 18 and a dent/deep scuff above the vent in the same location as my 18. So no fixing this truck without replacing the dash.

I've bought a lot of new cars and Raptors seem to have the worst quality control of any new vehicle I've ever purchased. I guess it doesn't bother most people, but if I'm buying any new car, it better be damn near perfect from the factory. I'm bummed, I love Raptors but I'm not desperate to buy a truck at this price with so many defects.

You should check out the Bentayga. Definitely more appropriate given your expectations.

What is wrong with expecting quality on a $70k truck that is standard on a $25k Toyota Corolla? I don’t understand saying oh you should look at a different car or truck, there is nothing wrong with expectations of quality at this level.

so... everything else is good? It sounds to me like you have the makings of a deal here, just make repairing this a contingency. I’d suggest not letting perfect be the enemy of good here. get it fixed, take the deal and enjoy life.

first of all, I want to thank you for paying this much attention. We’ve had a raft of users here buy their trucks in bad weather, do the deal late at night, or just short changed the pre-sale inspection and they’ve paid the price for it finding warranty issues very soon after leaving. I was kind of surprised at people spending this kind of coin and not devoting more time to looking at what they’re buying.

I took pictures from every angle, even underneath. I crawled under front and back, using the ‘post all your 2017 problems here’ thread as guidance. I shot pictures of the interior, then we took a long test drive, almost an hour, we spent another 45 minutes just on the truck controls and tech.

You definitely seem to have drawn the bad hand of potential Rap purchases. I’ve been out of the market since I got my 2017 so maybe there’s something to your observations, who knows? I know it doesn’t help things to say “gee, mine is perfect” but I would say it’s not common for folks to find major items in pre-purchase inspection. Rare, but it happens.

Yes I expect a lot for 70k. And I've bought 15 vehicles and never seen this type of poor quality on any new automobile I've purchased. So basically your saying in 2019 it's perfectly fine for new vehicles to have crap paint, rusted parts, corroded parts, misaligned door panels that could leak air, crooked bumpers, crooked steering columns, numerous scratches, etc, etc?

Well everything was good on the last truck, fit and finish was good but they said the dash would need to be replaced and I might end up with more damage than it's worth. So they recommend not doing it. I'm trading my 18 because my dash is scuffed up so it makes no since to buy this truck.

I appreciate you're input. I'm fine having dealers fix minor items, painting a little rust on my diff. My 18 shadow black even has some orange peel, but nothing like I've seen on the 19's. And I'm not cool with dash replacement, painting panels or adjusting doors when buying new because it never turns out well. I've tried it before.

I'm probably going to wait until early summer and see if some of the production problems get resolved. My 18 was fine, the dash was just scuffed bad in numerous places with screw driver marks on the driver side vent, dont ask me how it got there with 15 miles on it?

I went over mine with a fine tooth comb. 2018 Agate crew with orange accent interior. They put it in their body shop for me to go over before delivery. It had a scratch on the tail gate and that was all, recon got it out enough for me to not have an issue with it. After all, I intend to use the hell out of this thing. Sorry you are having a hard time, keep looking - the truck is worth it.
