Trip results..... Thanks again Trey, your post was helpful in planning our trip! We stayed in the Chisos Mountains Lodge which is the only hotel in Big Bend and you need to book 1 year in advance to get a king size bed and decent room. The food at the restaurant wasn't that great, DO NOT order the prime rib. It was like chewing rubber. The quesadillas and chicken fingers weren't bad. We are bringing microwave dinners next time. There is a microwave and fridge in the room. Day 1 we drove into Big Bend, filled up at Panther Junction which only has 92 octane fuel as the highest rated. Drove back to the start of Dagger Flat and then south down Old Ore Road. Trey's description of these roads was right on. I'm not sure how many miles these roads were, but Old Ore was very rocky, narrow and slow. This is where I got all the lovely pinstripes. I highlighted the route in green and I think it took about 3 hours. Saw some Border Patrol on horseback at the top of McKinney Springs. Then later that afternoon we hiked to "The Window" for the sunset. This was about 3 hours round trip. Day 2 we hiked up the Lost Mine Trail. This was steeper and a little more difficult than The Window trail. Took 1.5 hours up and 1 hour coming down. Had some MRE's for lunch at the top which were better than the restaurant food at the lodge. Water break on the way up! This is from the peak which is around 7500ft. Then in the afternoon we went down Glenn Springs Road (green) to River Road East (red). Glenn Springs was smooth in some sections and a little rocky in others. River Road East was the fastest trail that we went on avereaged 40-50mph and I had a ton of fun on it. I'm driving this trail first next time! Packed up and ready to go home! I highly recommend this trip and there is so much to do and the park is so big 2 days went by really fast!
