I just went through this. I found a local shop who sold me new OEM take-offs to replace my worn shocks (also around 50K). Now I have a spare set to send away for rebuild next time and don't have to have downtime.

PS - Do NOT do what you are asking about. NO! Just NO!

Sounds like a day trip to Galesburg.
Hey RubyRed, clear your in box so I can pvt-msg you some contact info, please

I have been looking for at least a spare pair of fronts. The rears are no problem.
I just haven't seen a set of fronts at a reasonable price for dust collectors, ie, sitting on the shelf for 4 to 5 years then being needed for a couple of weeks etc.

I can get a lathe, what dimensions should I turn to for the 4x4 mod?
Might use ash, could maybe use a Base Ball Bat for a starter?

To those interested in the solution....
I bought a new set of fronts.
To any one in South West Illinois/St Louis area, I have a set of workable but tired fronts.
I would be open to lending them, renting them, letting someone else use them.....
for a few weeks at a time while theirs are getting fixed.
I plan on keeping them towards the day when I need to do the rebuild thing again.
