No it is the size of the shock itself they are 3 inch diameter for the housing witch allows more oil in there to stay cooler for longer runs and the ability to soak up more rough stuff.

I don't mean to sound like that's not a big deal but is that all? You really need to do regular Baja type playing to need those right?

That is not the ONLY reason.. Last 3" of compression is the internal bumpstop.. You can adjust the valving on the truck (set ride from soft to firm with 10 clicking adjustment points). Definite stops on the adjustments of ride, compression, and rebound. Instead of guessing with counting turns. From everything thing i have read, everyone i have talked to, and seen The main reason for me is that they are not and off the shelf shock adapted to fit the Raptor. They were specifically designed, built, tested, tuned for the Raptor.

There is no magic/special tuning/valving of Fox or Kings from factory. Every vendors fox and king shocks are the same. (per fox and king reps.. Company A fox/king shocks are the same as company B,C,D,E,F shocks)

I know this is going to cause a shit storm, but facts are facts..

Not at all, I first looked into the 3.0 shocks because I wanted the top perch stance but without the harsh ride, plus you can fine tune the height to your liking, no more choosing between the 3 perches. The 3.0 I chose will also give me a little more articulation and droop thanks to the hiems in the shock mounts, the OEM shocks have a stiff rubber bushing. The 3.0's also have compression and rebound settings that you can change to your liking for off road terrain or even aggressive on road driving.

I have firsthand experience with stock fox & 3" fox shocks on my raptor. There is a notable difference between the two & I choose to go with Fox for a few reasons over King.
1. 2.25 inches more drop travel.
2. Adjustability rebound compression & ride height
3. Fox is kicking butt in off-road racing in recent years

The 3.0's are ALL Awesome - but there's a trade off...

Having read the reviews, I think you really can't go wrong with any of these 3.0's. Some may execute a bit better offroad at the far extreme end of the performance spectrum, but sacrifice smoother ride on the pavement. It's a trade off that one must weigh thoughtfully. I think that for the majority of us mere mortal weekend warriors on this forum - an upgrade to the 3.0's is a very reasonable proposition. Not very many are up to the expensive, time consuming, and invasive task of chopping up their truck to make a full-blown long travel pre-runner. Many talk big, but most have a smaller mod expense account or wives that say uh uh... no no no... Maybe after they win the lottery and/or get another newer model for their daily driver like Chris or Rick haha. Otherwise is usually just a long winding progression as it becomes possible - like Tizz and others are doing.

Our trucks are daily drivers so most want to retain a nice smooth ride on the pavement. My Fox 3.0's are every bit as silky on the road as the stock shocks, but they deliver in spades offroad. Like Jekyll & Hyde haha. These are full-blown race shocks and compared to stock they soak up badness in a big way. Ask any of the guys who went on the Lil Sahara Dune Run. Very impressive performance - from blowing past the stock trucks through the whoops to soaking up massive jumps, they handled it all without a hiccup (Joe's 3.0's = same story). Then a smooth five hour drive home and back to daily driver duties the next day. There it is on reserve - like a stealth weapon - ready and able whenever called upon to kill it offroad. Beauty and the Beast. Best of both worlds!

2 1/4" more droop travel on the Foxes than the Kings??? Front or rear??? I'm fairly positive that is NOT true...

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three brands. I run the Fox's on my raptor and love them. On my F100 race truck I run Foxes on the rear and Kings on the front, both work fantastic. As far as rebuilding them its the same cost for either brand, about 45$ each shock. I used to run Donahoe shocks(Icons before they were Icon) on my Super Duty and loved them. (I'm sure they have improved since then).

That was when icon was using blisten shock bodies, now they make them in house.
