On our front ends, do the drive axels remain non rotating in 2 wheel drive, and only rotate in 4x4 when the vacuum is released and the drive collars engage to mate the axel shafts?

Just wondering if the front cv joints are rotating at all in 2x4. If not and the wheel is just spinning on the wheel bearing then mid perch or top perch shouldn't wear on the joints any more than the low perch setting unless you are in 4x4.

Am I thinking correct?

Right you are! 4x4 is when they start rotating.
