Aluminum isn't strong?

OK, so the new aluminum F-150 rated highest in the IIHS crash test, I wonder how it would compare in a vehicle fire. I saw a photo not long ago where a new F-150 was destroyed in a fire, it looked like the thing just melted.

Here is one of the photos I'm referring to, it does show how well the steel firewall works. Although, it was probably meant to keep occupants safe in the event of an engine fire.

That looks like a fairly hot fire!!! I'm assuming that if a fire like this occurred on any truck that it would probably be completely destroyed - aluminum or steel. I guess the new aluminum bodied trucks will be easier to haul off once this happens.......

Aluminium is tough, but not as strong as titanium. They are also light weight and rust proof. By the way to the TS can I post your link in my FB page that I created. I vote for a Titanium F-150... call it the Dubai model, cause you'll need to live there to buy one

Why can't aluminum be smelted in the presence of air? Why doesn't aluminum rust like iron and steel do? Why don't we build trucks out of titanium, tungsten, iridium, or whatever aircraft black boxes are made of?

Take a continuing ed course in metallurgy and find out.


But I'll assure you of this: Ford's move to aluminum had everything to do with meeting government fleet fuel economy requirements and nothing to do with metallurgy.

aluminum is very strong, ask the original land rover owners.
