I had an idea to put amber lights in the cargo light/chmsl lamp and wire them to a switch.. has anyone done this, or modded the housing to make it into a chase light?

I thought about mounting my feniex cannons in the housing. There's enough room. They would make a good hidden rear amber but when I decided to utilize the brake light function I wanted them mounted on the outermost part of the cab. A whelen vertex would probably fit better than the feniex.

I like both of those, as I could keep the cargo light function and wire the amber switchback to aux 4 or something like that..

well, i ordered 2 feniex cannons in amber/white the other day and completed my light mod today.. It went pretty well I think, but I think if i was to do it over again Id get the all amber ones, instead of amber/white.

The cargo light functions just like normal, when tied into the dome light circuit. I was able to make all my connections in the passenger side footwell. I used AUX 4 for Amber, and AUX 3 for strobe. I had the idea to tie the strobe into the hazard lamps, but decided AUX3 would be fine for now.

The modification to the lamp worked out really perfect.. The hole inside past where the bulb socket attaches to the lamp is the exact size of the cannon lens. I used a 120 disc on a air grinder and just buzzed the part where the socket plugs in, drilled 2 pilot holes and screwed the cannons in..

Wiring was pretty straight forward.. These lights have 3 signal circuits. Circuit 1 is cancelled out by 2, and 1 and 2 are cancelled out by 3.. so white cargo light (circuit1) gets connected to dome circuit (Gray/violet on my 2012 SCAB) and functions just like the stock light except much brighter..

I connected solid amber to AUX4

finally I programmed an amber strobe on AUX3

these lights are pretty cool. Total cost was $140 for the lights and about 2hrs of garage time. I really like the clean, hidden look and having a much brighter cargo light doesnt hurt, but again, I might have gone all amber if I had to to it over. There's 16 leds, 8 white and 8 amber and there doesnt appear to be a way to light them all at once.

I wonder if the cannon 360s would be better in that housing. They're designed for housings with smaller reflective areas.

the 360 would be used if you were coming in from the top or bottom. I thought about those also, but I think the 120 is the way to go in this housing. Not sure theres enough room to mount them on top or bottom of the reflector, and if you mounted them how i did, no light is going straight out the lens... itd be cool to try one
