In projectors, you'd be fine - beam pattern still has cut-off... However, Noah said he's installed some and removed some due to weak output compared to the HID bulb.

I think I'll stick with my 50watt Evo-X HID's from RaptorRetrofit. This D3S bulb does sound like a good option for those not willing to go full blown retrofit though.

I too am very anxious to see if they work. If so I will be buying a set right away. Thank you for taking the plunge and testing them.

Maybe only put one in and give us some comparison shots.

Perhaps I can shed some "light" on this subject since I have seen every possible bulb/projector upgrade for the OEM HID lights.


The OEM HID bulb is - Osram 35w D3S 66340HBI (4150K). D3S bulbs are mercury free which in the HID world means its pretty much like walking around with a crutch because its "eco friendly"


There are several replacement D3S bulbs, expect to pay $200+ for a real D3S bulb, anything you see on ebay in the $60 range is a fake or complete garbage. There are tons of knock off bulbs out there.


Because these are mercury free bulbs replacing the OEM bulb with a "higher quality" bulb will only gain a few hundred lumen at best. Also most these bulbs are higher kelvin (6000K), when you increase kelvin rating a result is the lumen level drops. So in short you can get a "whiter" light output but the brightness will barely change.


If you do want to go down this road here are the real deal bulbs that you want. Having seen all these bulbs in action I can honestly say its not worth that much money to just replace the bulbs. All you will get is a whiter light.


Philips - D3S: Philips 42403 WX Ultinon


Osram - Osram 66340 5000K D3S CBI: Osram's Eco-Friendly combination where Mercury-Free technology meets lighting perfection.


We can get these bulbs if anyone wants them.


If you want an actual performance upgrade you can send us your OEM HID headlights for the EvoX 50w upgrade. We replace the OEM projector with the EvoX projector which has much wider low beams and more concentrated high beams for further distance. The bulb type switches to D2S and we use 5500K bulbs for a nice pure white light which we power with 50w ballasts for a total 2400 lumen gain.


Theres a bunch of guys here with the EvoX upgrade, ask any of them and they will tell you its a HUGE improvement.

RR, thanks for that professional review of those bulbs. You answered all of my questions for sure. Still waiting to see if there will ever be a housing mounted 50W ballast...

I was looking at the specs comparing the Ultinon bulbs you linked and the Xtreme Vision bulbs. It seems the Xtreme Vision bulbs specs are slightly better than the Ultinon. Its color temperature is closer to natural light and the lumen rating is higher as well.
