"Recap from the live stream/APCD Hearing Board meeting/next steps:
First, thank you to everyone who watched, wrote letters, attended and donated speaking time. You are all awesome!!
The outcome of today’s meeting is not ideal for the OHV Community. The agreement leaves it open for the APCD to shut down as much of the park as they want to reach a 50% reduction in emissions from the ODSVRA by mid-2023. Essentially, we can expect to see roughly 100 acres lost PER YEAR over the next 5 years.
What can WE do now?
1. Stay engaged with State Parks’ Public Works Plan (PWP). Attend meetings. There are 2 meetings coming up. May 22 in Arroyo Grande and May 23 in Fresno (more info to follow). This is a redesign of our current park. Don’t let someone else who doesn’t ride design the park for you! Let’s get moving fences back for more riding area, Oregon dune like trail systems through vegetation, a southern campground and a southern entrance in writing and push State Parks to get the PWP process done swiftly.
2. Locals - We must get Lynn Compton reelected. She understands the economic value of the dunes and fights for our district. As an example, developer fees were siphoned from our district to another part of the county but she fought to bring the funds back. Know if you’re registered to vote. Know your polling place. Make sure your vote counts on June 5. Donate to Lynn’s campaign.
3. Non-Locals - When you’re in town and you see a local business with a Jimmy Paulding election sign, let it be known that they are not getting your off-road dollars because Paulding does not support the ODSVRA.
4. Use the sand dollar cards! Write how much you are spending on the back of the card and hand it to the cashier with your payment. Ask them to give it to the manager/owner.
5. If someone challenges you saying that no one is trying to shut the dunes down, refer them to the Sierra Club’s letter about wanting to vegetate the dunes. They want to vegetate all dunes and only allow low impact tent camping...no off-road use. Many of the red shirts cite this Sierra Club letter as a reference.
6. Last, but certainly not least, donate when you can and what you can to Friends of Oceano Dunes to help prevent continued loss of the OHV Park. 100% of your money goes towards keeping the dunes open. Check and see if your employer has a matching program. Many employers will match 100% of your donation, up to a certain amount, as long as the organization you’re donating two is a 501(c)(3). Friends is a 501(c)(3). Ask about the match."

They are very misleading and they ignore things like local businesses and facts contradictory to their argument and their continued development only makes things worse. I think at the very least we will be able to find a nice compromise such as moving the riding area and adding another southern entrance. The recent decision is unfortunate but I think the scientific advisory board and community stakeholders could help with this compromise. Also when the time comes for the first checkup on the dust abatement order and if no significant changes are found, we could have the entire area back. Although I don't think the opposition would just give up just give up.
