You betcha there's a reason. New engines have casting flash and particulant debris in them, and produce a measure of additional debris as they break in. It's always been my policy to break in the engine and then change the oil promptly.

This policy of mine was underscored recently when I bought a new Husaberg enduro motorcycle. The factory manual advises that the first oil change should be done with ONLY ONE HOUR of engine running time recorded. I did that, and doggone if the oil wasn't dirty. It wasn't black, but it was quite dark.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w-20. Synthetic Oil in sub zero temps is a must , much less in high temp areas.

First oil change at 900 miles .

I fully believe this as well. Take your drop oil in the pan and swirl it in the sun light or under a bright light and you can see the metallic material in it . Try it with your first oil change and then each subsequent oil change . Don't get nervous it is normal to see some , the point is your first oil change may contain far more then the following changes.

I will go up to 5k on the Mobil 1 . It depends on the seasonal changes or how I have been driving .
Regardless of miles I always change my oil after the winter months .
What is interesting is what BMW does. Mobil 1 was / is their factory fill and they will go 10K . At least they used to . Not sure if that is still there recommendation.

No, not 3,000 miles. There's no reason to stress your wallet like that, given the exceptional qualities of modern multi-viscosity synthetic oil, better filtration, and modern metalurgy and engine design. I change oil every 6,000 miles, and that's actually quite conservative.

Don't forget, though, that oil change intervals should be based on driving habits and conditions. If you dog it a lot or drive in dusty/sandy conditions, you should strongly consider more frequent oil changes than if you don't.

Default oil oil oil
What brand oil do you choose to use? What is your reasoning behind the brand you choose? This is just out of curiosity

Mobil 1 .
I read a white paper on it and met with a few of their engineers in Sturgis one year . There are so many benefits' to a good synthetic oil , one that really stands out is the fact it maintains it's viscosity across such a broad temperature spectrum ; particularly in frigid winter temps . Anyone who has started an engine at -20F knows . At these frigid of temps conventional oil is like jelly and your engine is being starved of oil at the most critical time it needs it , when it is starting.
I had a small 4 cylinder that when I started it in the winter it sounded like a gnome was under the hood with a frickn hammer for the first 10 seconds after starting . I switched it over to Mobil 1 and problem solved.
Anyone who does not believe in the benefit of synthetic oil should do two things.
Look up the temp at which conventional oil fails / burns and starts to turn to sludge.
The second thing they should do is take a quart of conventional and a quart of synthetic and put it their freezer for a day , then take it out and compare the difference .
I will run Valvoline full synthetic if it goes on super sale , which it does once in awhile . Otherwise Mobil 1 all the way .
Ruger likes this.

I have used M1 in my M3 track car for almost 10 years. car has 125k very hard miles. Its within 4hp from 30k miles. That is the margin of error of the dyno by the way.
