Hello, Kristin from Blackstone here. I'm wondering if maybe you looked at the link to a sample report instead of your actual report? Sometimes people click the wrong thing. Your actual report would have been an attachment to the email we sent.

Hi Kristin, I am sure I selected the right one it had my name on it.. I am just mystified how the coolant, and transmission fluid did not show up on the sample.. Maybe it was a fluke, bad day etc.. But I sent my sample in as a corrupt sample and I knew that before I sent it in. I was just trying to find out what your test would detect or not. My sample looked the same as everyone else and did not mention anything about other fluids. Maybe I am wrong and you don't test for those items... Anything from you to shed some light?

I think I found your report though I'm not sure...I did a search based on your city and looked for samples from 2012. So assuming I'm looking at the correct report, it was a factory sample from your truck? I do see potassium and sodium in the oil, and those are markers for coolant. We did not highlight and talk about them because the levels were low enough that we assumed they were just leftovers from the factory that would wash out with time. Sometimes we'll see those additives in factory grease, and we try to err on the side of caution with new vehicles. All kinds of things show up in factory oil and we'd hesitate to call anything a problem without seeing a trend, just because most dealers would roll their eyes if a guy took his factory sample oil analysis to them and complained.

We check for water using the flashpoint test and it only detects water at greater than 500 ppm. So if there was less water than that in the oil, it would not have shown up.

Transmission oil mainly contains phosphorus and a little zinc, and those are the same additives used in engine oil. So when a little transmission oil is added to a sample of engine oil, we can't rely on the additives to "see" it. if enough was present, we would see a diluted viscosity. You did have a light viscosity, though you didn't mention what grade it was supposed to be. A lot of factory oils are 5W/20 and the viscosity of your sample would qualify as a 5W/20, but if your factory oil actually was a 5W/30 and transmission oil was added to the sample, that would explain why the viscosity read light.

As I said before, we test every sample and we'd be happy to give you a tour if you're ever in the area. And if you do ever sample with us again and aren't happy with the results, please let us know! We never mind rerunning a sample to double check results or re-doing the comments when we get more information.

Any take on the alarming increase in Iron levels?

I would send a note to Royal Purple. In general that is way too high of ZDDP Zinc / Phosphorus levels to have in a newer vehicle. Not needed in general with roller cam engines plus can and will harm emission components mainly the converter.

But back to the iron, that is way too high. Seems it would be cylinder walls or camshaft material. Maybe a cam follower is failing.

Yeah, that iron amount is crazy high if that's the PPM reading. How did you take your sample? Did you clean around the drain outlet? Did you wait a few seconds before taking your sample after the drain plug was removed. I know metals can be high during break-in, but it looks like you've got at least 11k miles on your truck along with doing 5k severe service change interval.

For perspective, my truck had around 33k miles at last sample and had an iron reading of 14 PPM. I use Amsoil 5w-20 Signature Series after initially using Amsoil OE Synthetic. I switched because my TBN was consistently a bit low even at a 5k change interval. I use the OEM Motorcraft oil filter.

I'll do another UOA two oil changes from now as the remnants of OE oil will be gone and I'll also see if the magnetic drain plug had any effect. Haven't sent off a sample since installing that.
