If you use the defrost in the winter the ac is activated even with the cab temp set to 90.
I pull the fuse for the compressor in the winter.

^ that's not recommended any longer. The new registrants are smaller molecules and can leak out much easier. Running the AC in the winter keeps the system lubricated by cycling the oil through the system. Otherwise o-rings and hoses start to dry out. Letting the small refrigerant molecules sneak past and leak out.

I believe the reason to disconnect the AC is to save gas, right? Or is there another reason?

No, not for mpg, LOL I'm realistic I own a Off Road Racer.
For HP, I've been doing that for long time, its just habit.
The idea of having to ac on in defrost mode is to dry the air, I don't see a difference.
I can understand your concern but it's only what, three months maybe four this year.
I put the fuse back in last week already.
