Hey everyone,

Hoping this is the right place to post but I have a quick question on a truck I am looking at.

It is a 2014 screw with 50k miles. Dealership has replaced front shocks, but not rear and some some maintence to prep for sale. A bit confused why the rear shocks weren't replaced but I will look into it.

My main concern is that the rear diff has been resealed. I instantly noticed a bit of the seal protruding the diff housing when I was inspecting the undercarriage. Is this something I should be concerned with? Is this a common problem on these trucks?

Essentially - should this make me continue my search elsewhere? I have a couple others on my list to look at but this one is one owner and local. Simply want to make sure this isn't the tip of an iceburg. Thank you!

There is no drain on the diffs. So to change the oil you have to remove the cover.
No way around it and not an issue

just had my both differentials serviced, the rear has a thin goo seal material all around when the cover was put on and bolted down. that's a good thing not a bad thing.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I am used to the diff setup on my 4Runner with a drain.

It caught my attention as the gasket was a bit obtrusive and stuck out a fair amount after it had been torqued back down.

Thanks for the quick responses, looking forward to actively posting once I have one in my driveway!

i feel like you need a lot more research in vehicles in general before pulling the trigger on a project fun truck imo.

the front shocks were likely leaking or making noise or both, the rears probably arent doing either. dealer isnt going to fix it if it doesnt look or sound broken.

I went ahead and popped in a Mag-Hytec. Felt like it was always condensing outside the protruding seal. Looks great, cheap and holds more fluid!

Couldn't disagree with you more. I am well versed in mechanics and have owned a few euro "projects" over the years.

This truck will not be a project by any means, and will not be seeing any off-roading other than light trails / bad weather. I am looking for the cleanest and best condition example I can find so I can enjoy it for a few years. Gasket looked a bit weird, so I asked for confirmation.

Quoted ~$1700 for new rear shocks installed on this truck. It's nice but looking at a few simultaneously

You can have the shocks rebuilt through this forum and make them even better with different upgrades or directly through vendors here depending on where you live. $1700 to replace just the rears is an absurd amount.... But so you know keep in mind the rebuild will run you over $1000 for all four with upgrades. Unfortunately even if you find a truck with low miles, that has never been off road it does not guarantee that the shocks are still good. Thats the nature of the beast. Best of luck in your search. Oh also consider replacing the old discontinued style of KOs BFG tires with new KO2s BFG rubber. A lot of low mile 2013 and 2014 trucks still have the original tires....($1200)
