So the gen 1s are getting up there in mileage so the time will come where we will all need to do this. Ford says 150k but i would only recommend that if you never tow and only drive on street.
After a rough 4 hour offroading rock crawling in baja a couple weeks ago i decided that it was time (she got pretty hot). Anyways i have 88k on the clock, and after doing it im glad i did.
Initially i was going to have the dealer do it, but they charge $300 so i thought i would tackle it myself.
Don't get discouraged, it is pretty easy...
This is how i did it with a couple "modifications" that i will show below in pictures.
What is needed-
24 quarts (6 gallons) of motorcraft lv transmission oil https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X4AXGCC/?tag=fordraptorforum-20
I used 5.5 gallons to get it "cherry" clean
Note- price fluctuates, i got each case for $60 each
Pump for the last quart https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BQW5LK/?tag=fordraptorforum-20
Transmission cooler line disconnect https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TQ6P40/?tag=fordraptorforum-20
Transmission filter ft188 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080B4S0E/?tag=fordraptorforum-20
This is the YouTube video to go by [Y]A7UZFiwizKQ[/Y]
After the initial drain and dropping the pan, cleaning it and installing the new filter i put 4 quarts in through the fill tube (see below) then to start i used the remote start and shut it off by tapping the start button again after it was running.
that tube is 1/2 inch and 5 feet long
Note after 2 remote starts you need to cycle the key. Also you need to depress the hood pin to think its closed
Drain after the cooler (drivers side fitting)
End result on the left, fluid from bottle, and how it looked when i started
After final flush, connect cooler line and start truck. Turn off and then fill the transmission til it overflows. Drive around to get temp above 175 then check level on flat ground with engine running in park. You will need to add approximately 1 more quart (hence the pump)
Once last thing. You WILL need a pair of leather gloves to check the final level
Thats it. Easier than doing the spark plugs. Total cost for me was $170, and piece of mind it was done right
Note the gloves. Cats were very hot and i was never under stress.
