What road/trail were you on in the video?

I was on the trail system thats right above central city....neat place to go in the winter months due to the lack of shelf roads/hudge drop offs. Its a realitivly safe area, even if you make a mistake.

I go a lot after work, around twice a week...so if you (or anyone else wants to join) just send me a PM. Since its pretty much always dark at those hours, the more lights the better...

Chains still help a lot in deep snow, especially since there's usually ice underneath. Even in just snow, the chain ribs act like paddles...

I've been on the trail system a few times that you can access by the KOA campground above Central City. I assume you're talking about the same one.

I usually hit it before going to Black Hawk and have hit it afterwords as well if I have an early exit from the casino.

Not sure where that KOA is, but i think we are talking about the same trail system.

Basically we just go into CC, turn left and go up the hill till you see the off road vehicle parking area. Jump on the trail there.

Not sure how deep into that system you have gone, but it goes very, very far.

There are also many trails here that are shelf roads, not much wider than the truck, such as Switzerland trail in Boulder. Going off the edge is roughly a 1000' drop, sure death. I made the mistake of doing this trail once last year, and will never do it again if there is any snow/ice on it. The traction was one those if your going 3 mph and hit the brakes you slide 10'. Once I was on the trail i was commited. There was no way to turn around. Backing up would just slide you towards the edge. With the narrow trail tilted to the edge of the 1000' drop, its serious stuff. Made it through but defiantly slid a few times towards that edge. Kept my seat belt off and my hand on the drivers door, i was ready to jump if i got near that edge. After that day, decided to never go 4 wheeling anywhere in the winter without chains.

Stones is all I can say. My palms got sweaty reading that portion.

I carry a full set of 4 chains even with my studded duratracs.

I also went with the lower profile diamond chains, they are not SAE class S rated but do clear the fenders. Never needed them on the road or above 5mph so they have not torn anything up for me.

There are situations where I have needed them and they have been life savers even with the studs.

Good to know. If you have never been to the rockies or sierras it is worth the trip. You can't really tell anyone who has not seen them how unbelievably huge they are or how high up the roads are. If you have never been on a trail thats iced over and 6 or 7 % grade. Just imagine being on a 50 degree incline nose down with a 90 degree turn you must make and shit is just sliding on you no matter what. If you make it your first time your seat is gonna have a donut hole where your ass was.

Hey Mike, so you run the same chains as me. Are those 35x12.5 tires? Any issues with rubbing when using on the front?

If no issues, im ordering another set for the front...
